Jay's fight to recover.
Spende geschützt
Dear Friends and Family
Jay was admitted to hospital in Toronto with a bowel obstrustion Nov 15. On Nov 17th his health rapidly declined, he became septic and went into septic shock with multi system organ failure. He had 3 abdominal surgeries back to back to back in order to save his life. There were moments when we thought Jay may not make it. His will to live and a little help from above kept him with us. He suffered kidney failure which lead to dialysis. Pneumonia which put him back on life support for 11 days. When the doctors lifted the sedation medication, Jay was unable to move. After many specialist and tests, Jay was diagnosed with Guillain Barre Syndrome also known as GBS. His body had suffered so much trauma from the septic shock that his immune system went into overdrive and attacked his nerves.
Jay recieved 7 treatments of plasma exchange. He is still unable to lift his limbs off the bed. He is unable to feed himself, scratch his face, wipe his tears. He is unable to use his hands or move. He is completely dependant on his family and nursing staff for care. He has lost all control over everything except for his mind and positive attitude. Each day is a struggle but Jay makes the best of it. He pushes through those dark feelings and has never said, "Why me". He is never alone as either myself or his mom and sister are with him at all times. He has a sitter that stays with him at night.
Most people recover from GBS within a year but it can take longer for some. Some people have residual weakness and long term issues with mobility and energy.
Jay's fight is not over as he will have to endure another abdominal surgery to correct his bowel and stoma. We are waiting to hear if Jay is strong enough from a GBS perspective to undergo another surgery now, or if he moves to a rehab facility first and then come back when he is stronger for the surgery.
Jay is eager is get back to coaching Liam's baseball team and working with the kids in the community. He cannot wait to play on his men's baseball team and golf with his friends. He misses his work colleagues and his clients. He is determined to get back to his normal life and knows how much hard work he is going to have to do with physio but he has the drive, positive attitude and dedication to get there.
Our family's life has been turned upside down, emotionally and physically. The kids, Liam (8) and Evan (6) have been amazingly strong. They ask when Dad will be coming home, and we honestly tell them, we are not sure. We are keeping life as normal as possible for them and living one day at a time.
Many of you have asked how you can help. This fund will help us with expenses and Jay's care over the next year or however long it takes. Our goal is to get Jay home as soon as possible to continue his rehab.
Thank you
