Newport Beach and Costa Mesa residents, businesses, and other concerned parties are raising funds to commence legal action opposing the City of Newport Beach's proposed Homeless Shelter at 592 Superior Avenue, located on the west side border of Costa Mesa and Newport Beach.

We invite you to join your neighbors in the fight against the City of Newport Beach from using 592 Superior Avenue as a Homeless Shelter by contributing to this GoFundMe campaign.

BAD FOR THE COMMUNITY

More than 5,000 residents – many of them retirees and young families with children – live within one mile of the proposed Homeless Shelter at 592 Superior Avenue.  The City of Newport Beach refuses to discuss the existing services for the homeless, the surrounding schools, and adjacent residential communities that will be severely impacted by the placement of the proposed 592 Superior Avenue Homeless Shelter.  The proposed Homeless Shelter at 592 Superior Avenue will increase the riskof people with substance abuse and/or mental illnesses tocompromises the safety of hundreds of children and pedestrianswho walk/bike daily to multiple schools and business in the immediate area.  This proposed location for a Homeless Shelter in the direct vicinity of homes and schools puts our most vulnerable residents at risk.  The impact to the community is catastrophic—public alcohol and drug consumption, police interventions, increased property crime, assaults, and decreased property values.

BAD FOR THE CITY

There is no transparency. The City of Newport Beach has chosen to hide their plans for the 592 Superior AvenueHomeless Shelter. All discussions have been held behind “Closed Sessions” with no disclosures to the public. The issue is simple, the City of Newport Beach’s declaration of a “crisis” under Government Code Section 8698 violated the public’s right to due process.  The residents of Newport Beach have the right to due process and to protect their families from harm, and their properties from inverse condemnation.

BAD FOR THE HOMELESS

In an effort to misrepresent the true nature of proposed site, the City of Newport Beach and the City Council have intentionallyfailed to publicly disclose that the 592 Superior Avenue property is not only a CNG Fueling Station for city vehicles, but that the site is also a 150-300 tons transfer station for refused garbage collections.  The homeless have the right to a safe place to sleep without the fear of injury or death.

Please note the following details for this funding campaign:

1. We care about homeless people.
2. We believe the homeless have a right to safe and humane shelter.
3. Residents have a right to a safe community for our children and senior citizens.
4. We believe the best option is a partnership with the City of Costa Mesa on its permanent shelter at 3175 Airway Avenue.
5. The funds from this GoFundMe campaign will be used exclusively to support legal action to stop the City of Newport Beach from pursuing the homeless shelter at 592 Superior Avenue.
