Nazareth Children's Home Van

Independence: the value of independence is huge. We all desire to have it.  It is something that has unfortunately been lost in many parts of Africa. This nation has been cast into dependency. Rather than using our resources as a way to teach and to promote sustainability, we have settled for the easy fix. We have done it all ourselves. If you ask me, it has lead to more damage than it has good.

Andrew, Carol, Josh, Verity, Lauren, myself and other volunteers have a dream for Nazareth to be self sustaining. We are on our way to this goal, and many many projects have promoted this. It is time however, for the biggest one yet and we could not be more excited.

This project has been many years in the making, but this will change everything.  We are going to be purchasing a van which will be used as a taxi. This taxi will have the ability to carry 14 people and in just 2 years it will have paid for itself.

Let me break it down:
Cost for the taxi: $15,000 (43 Million Ugandan shillings)
Per month it will bring in: $700 (2, 240,000 Ugandan shillings)
Per year: $8400 (26, 880,000 Ugandan shillings)

The cost of Nazareth per month:
Food: $180 (580,000 Ugandan shillings)
Other expenses (soap, firewood, food for animals): $150 (490,000 Ugandan shillings)
Electric bill: $35  (100,000 Ugandan shillings)
Water bill: $10 (30,000 Ugandan shillings)
Total expenses: $365 (1,200,000 Ugandan shillings)

This means that per month, they will be able to save almost half of what they make AND pay for all of their expenses. As of now the main income is motorcyles which are used as taxis but bring in only around $2.50 a day. They also have a chicken and pig project which bring in income, but it takes months for this to be ready.

The initial cost of the taxi is high, but when I tell you it will change everything, I mean it. Let us be a people that take part in sustainability. Let us be a nation that invests in the lives of these people so that they may then invest in themselves. So that they can be the ones to send their children to University, and they can be the ones to implement new projects, they can begin to save. The outcomes are limitless.
