Name Change Filing Fee Fundraiser!

Hi, all!

I'm Sydney Duncan, attorney director of the Magic City Legal Center. We're a non-profit, pro bono legal service dedicated to providing affirming legal representation to the LGBTQ+ community of Alabama. We specialize in name changes and gender marker amendments, having done hundreds for people of a trans experience who live in state. Our time and efforts are free to those in need, but sadly we are not budgeted to pay the filing fees, which can range from $25 to $81 per petition in local probate courts.

As our clients are typically low income or unemployed, you can imagine that a filing fee can put a dent in a household budget.

We believe having a name congruent with your gender identity shouldn't be cost restrictive, so with your help, we're hoping to provide an endowment dedicated to filing fees that will take this financial burden off of our trans clients. Given our client intake pace, we believe $5,000 is a conservative amount that should cover the filing fees for a single year.
