Tom Szulanczyk Memorial Butterfly Garden
Spende geschützt
Spring 2022 Update:
We recently installed the interpretative sign and planted the first seeds of the growing season! Help us continue to maintain this beautiful garden for the second year!
On April 29, 2021, after miraculously overcoming 6 months of medical issues, the world lost one of its greatest superheroes, well before his time—my dad.
One Christmas, sort of as a joke, I got dad a monarch butterfly kit—a small cage with mail order caterpillars, you raise them into butterflies, and then release them. It was the perfect gift for someone who has no ‘off button’ and was always on the move—the butterfly lifecycle takes about 2 months, so it required a lot of waiting. Dad took on this challenge as if he were curing cancer or putting people on Mars. He started calling himself the “Backyard Biologist” and learned everything he could about butterflies. He eventually planted tons of butterfly bushes in our backyard and built a more permanent habitat to raise his bugs. Last year, on November 8th, he hatched his 78th butterfly of the season.
Dad always lived his life to the fullest and made every attempt to give back to the community wherever he could. When we moved to Lewisburg, PA in 2000, he immediately joined the Board of Directors for the Lewisburg Area Recreation Authority and made it his mission to restore the community pool, ice rink, and surrounding park to the glory and splendor he remembered it as from back in the 50’s and 60’s when he was growing up here.
It’s now my turn to carry on his legacy. My family and I, in partnership with the Buffalo Valley Recreation Authority (formerly LARA), are creating the Tom Szulanczyk Memorial Butterfly Garden at the Lewisburg Area Reaction Park.
The idea behind this garden is to 1.) Create a certified butterfly habitat that promotes conservation of native flora and fauna; 2.) Provide an immersive learning experience for visitors on the butterfly lifecycle and the impacts of pollinators on the larger ecosystem; and 3.) Remember and honor my dad’s passion for nature, service, and his community.
Once the installation plans and timelines are finalized and ground-breaking occurs, I will provide routine updates.
