MAY 2020 UPDATE!
Like so many fundraising events this year, due to Covid-19 the White Horse Half Marathon was suspended, and is now cancelled for the year.
After initially giving up and eating biscuits, I've decided to not bin the horrible training in hail and rain on freezing winter mornings, be more useful, and just do my own half marathon. Three main benefits..
1) Resume raising money for important causes - now updated in light of the impact of Covid-19 on particular groups (see below).
2) I might come first if I run on my own!
3) Feels like a positive way to 'sign off' my 17 year job at the end of May as I move to a new one in the middle of all this.
Plan = The 'race' will be Friday 15th May.
Route = As I can't run round Blenheim palace anymore I will run to it and back home, twice. Conveniently hitting the 21k+ target.
Old donations = Thanks to those who already donated. No expectations of further giving, and all money already donated will still be given to the original cause (UK tree planting & reducing impact of rainforest destruction).
New donations = All new donations will be split between the below:
1) Crisis - Oxfordshire Homeless Emergency fund to be specific. Funding temp call centres (as main sites closed) and fund 'essentials' packages.
2) Main charity for Oxford hospitals - covering JR, Churchill, Nuffield and Horton in Banbury. They can supply thank-you packs & meals to front line staff. They also provide mental health support to staff for the inevitable problems that will follow, dealing with trauma on such a large scale.

Ps. Don't feel compelled to donate to go fund me at the end, they already take a small fee from each donation (same % as justgiving).

What i'm doing
Step up from a nice Sunday jog round Blenheim to my first half marathon - the White Horse in April. Alongside serious club runners, but I'm sure they won't mind me hanging onto their coattails. As long as I'm quicker than 2.5 hours I won't get disqualified!
Why
I don't want to chug people, and plenty raise money for good causes, so I've decided to make it a little different and boost tree planting & protection campaigns. Whether you're an environmentalist or not, want to help stop Brazilian rainforest destruction, or just want to boost UK green space and air quality, then this is a start.
What the money will be used for
Based on latest calculations/costs, hitting the target will mean planting approximately 20 trees in identified sites of need in the UK.
In addition I'll put the money through verified projects mentioned on carbon.footprint.com, which means the money will also support existing work to protect Brazilian rainforest, by an equivalent amount (ie plant a tree here protect a tree there).
How it's calculated & further info
In addition to removing harmful particulates from the air, one of the afore-mentioned trees will offset a tonne of Co2. For context, half a tonne of Co2 is generated by one economy return ticket flight to Poland.
Current guide prices (exchange rates change!):
£14 to fund a tree (+ protect in Brazil) = 1 tonne of Co2 removed.
Or if you prefer, £7 for half, or £3.50 for quarter (though I think minimum donation is a fiver on go fund me!)
Don't worry, I won't try and plant quarter of a tree! All money (regardless of final total) will be pooled and donated in one hit.
