U.S. / Cuba Ballet Cultural Exchange

January 18, 2015
After having obtained official permission from the Cuban Ministry of Culture to initiate the first official exchange, The Ruth Page School of Dance in Chicago, and Escuela Nacional de Ballet of Cuba in Havana, has announced their intention to create an educational exchange between the two schools in 2015.
Ruth Page, founder of the Ruth Page School of Dance, performed in Cuba in 1932. Ms. Page had a deep respect for Ms. Alicia Alonso, founder of the Escuela Nacional de Ballet of Cuba. Both women were pioneer ballerinas, teachers, and performers who contributed significantly to the art of dance. The exchange with Cuba is an opportunity to carry on the legacy of Ms. Page’s international career.
The exchange will originate with Phase I: the director, Ramona de Saa Bello, two instructors, and approximately six students, from Escuela Nacional de Ballet will attend the Ruth Page School of Dance from June 20 – July 1, 2015. The exchange will focus on both classical and modern dance techniques and the sharing of each country’s model for teaching dance. Phase II: Ruth Page School of Dance Director, Victor Alexander, and a group from The Ruth Page School of Dance, will make a similar educational journey to Havana in October 2015. Culmination of each phase includes an informal presentation of the technical learning and the completed choreographed piece to be performed in June and October 2015.
Phase I & II Fundraising Efforts
The Ruth Page School of Dance needs to raise approximately $80,000 for this historic cultural exchange project. This will cover travel, lodging, program and advertising costs, and per diem for each group’s participation in the exchange (see attached budget). To date we have raised $5,000.00 in private gifts, a committed $3,000.00 from Northeastern Illinois University and a pending commitment for a matching grant of up to $5000.00; totaling $13,000.00. We look to you as a friend of the Ruth Page School of Dance to help us in this crucial fundraising effort. Contributors will be invited to accompany us in Phase II at a special “Friend of Ruth Page Rate”.
To find out how you can help, please contact Victor Alexander, Director, Ruth Page School of Dance at [phone redacted] or Silvino da Silva Director of Communications and Marketing at [phone redacted].
Your contribution or sponsorship of this program will have a lifelong effect on everyone involved. Thank you in advance for your support.
