An important update: Due to concerns about security in Kenya, the organization I was traveling with -- Global Gifts -- decided Tuesday to cancel our trip. The decision followed Indiana University's decision, based on the threat of terrorism, to pull its students out of the same area of Kenya that we were planning to visit. Of course, this is very disappointing, but I'm glad that Global Gifts put the safety of the group first. As I mentioned previously, my family and I had given much consideration to the security issue. But because IU was initially staying the course, we thought the trip was still safe. Obviously, that has now changed.

With that in mind, my fundraising effort is now over. I have been overwhelmed by the generosity that all of you have shown. In fact, I was dumbfounded by how freely people gave their support. At this point, we've begun the process of withdrawing the money so we can return your gifts to you. Please send me an email with your address and we'll send you a check. My email is [email redacted]. Again, thank you for your generosity. I was amazed by the effort that my community around me and church put forth to raise money for this trip. Each donation that my friends and family gave made me feel very thankful to know that I have people who will see me through the adventures that I will encounter in life.

By now, you’ve likely heard about the recent tragedy in Kenya involving a terrorist assault on a university campus in the eastern region of the country. While this was a horrible event, it has only reaffirmed in me a desire to go to Kenya. Simply said, I want to be a part of building hope in Kenya and in this part of the world. Our Fair Trade mission aims to work with people who are trying to build a livelihood and lives for themselves, which is much different from the fear and the hopelessness represented by these terrorists. As a point of fact, the attack in Garissa occurred more than 400 miles away from where our trip is focused, in the Eldoret and Kissimu region of western Kenya. While that’s not a total assurance of safety, it is a helpful perspective. Whatever dangers exist, they are -- in my mind -- outweighed by the realization that we were not meant to aid the healthy, but the sick and those in need. This trip, which so many of you have supported, is an avenue for me to help answer that call. I plan to continue on that path. Your support in doing so is greatly appreciated.

With your help, I’d like to make a special trip to Kenya. For more than two years, I’ve been a volunteer with Global Gifts, a nonprofit Fair Trade store in Indianapolis. Global Gifts helps people in developing countries improve their living conditions by providing them an American market for their hand-made goods. Because it's Fair Trade, we ensure the profits return to the native artisans we work with. This trip to Kenya will give me a chance to meet some of these workers and build relationships with them. In one village, we’ll be building a mud house. In another, we’ll be helping them organize their warehouse to make it more efficient. Along the way, we’ll be visiting the children in an orphanage supported by the sale of Fair Trade goods. For me, this is more than an adventure. It is a preview of the career I’m looking to enter -- nonprofit management and the promotion of Fair Trade as a smart and socially-conscious way to do business. Any help you can offer is a tremendous gift. I'm thankful for your generosity.
