When my previous cabin was torn down Nov 2018 I decided to take the opportunity to take value in the lessons I'd learnt about myself and not feel defeated but determined. I was able to start a rebuild on private land, generously offered by a kind-hearted local farming family. I spent the first 3 months collecting stones and logs off the mountain until a pile was large enough to start a new cabin. As the new build grew, I was able to share my ideas of how to help veterans with some remarkable people and this lead to the formation of a community group. With the help of the community group, and that of my friends and family not only has the cabin been completed but more importantly a plan has been developed with intentions of helping veterans with suicide prevention, improving mental health, education, employment poverty prevention, tackling isolation, opportunities for local communities to use our facilities and organized family days for the veteran community whilst improving the countryside. The cabins main function is to provide a safe place for veterans in time of need. We are also running 3 mental health courses for the veteran charities community starting September 2019 which includes ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training) by multi-national award winning Noble Training Solutions. This will be a gateway to other courses with HIT Education to not only gain insight into mental health, but training opportunities to enable them to help others. During the working day there will be many options for mental health workshops and appropriate private counselling. Employment. Initially we will be training a backbone of predominantly veteran staff in mental health strategies but also learning about animal care, tree planting, dry stone walling, and a range of adventure sports so these long term staff can work as mentors to people coming in on short term basis. In these short terms we intend to learn about the individual and adapt how we help accordingly but essentially offer employment in a work place that been specifically chosen and adapted to work with many issues veterans face. Conservation We have an outline agreement with Natural Resources Wales to have tree planting projects and dry stone wall work in 2020. This will be supported by with The Dry Stone Association of Wales who will be providing the appropriate training. Local Community The newly built cabin will used by school children under the guidance of experienced organizations so they can learn how to build basic walls themselves while enjoying the surroundings and interacting with the farm's animals. The community group, under the supervision of Nathan Rees will be running outdoor mountain military functional fitness sessions. There's a lot more that needs to be done and I intend to do my part. Whether this project takes 3 years or 20 years, it is happening. The timeline largely depends on funding the set up costs - so please donate to help veterans help veterans as for someone, somewhere time is running out. Thank you.
