My Sister Narrowly Survived Thanksgiving

My name is Randy and my sister, Marci, narrowly survived last Thanksgiving. Mere blocks from her home, she was stopped at a red light when a driver lost control of their vehicle and slammed into her driver’s side door at highway speed.

FEB 2023: We are reducing our goal by 50%. Our new goal of $25,000 will fund Marci for 6 more months while she continues to recover from her Thanksgiving 2021 accident.

Marci suffered multiple profound injuries requiring immediate medical attention, but it took an hour to remove her from what was her mangled vehicle. Upon reaching the closest trauma center, she spent 14 days in the surgical ICU and had undergone urgent surgery to repair the most critical injuries. From there, she went to an acute rehabilitation hospital.

She was finally able to return home on Christmas Eve.

The most severe injury is multiple breaks in her femur (the long bone in her thigh). Because of this, Marci has been confined to a wheelchair most of the time. At six months, she should have been walking and returning to work, but devastatingly, her breaks failed to heal. In June 2022, Marci underwent her second surgery and then a third in December 2022. She is finally showing signs of healing, approaching a full year after her accident, but it’s disappointingly slow.

Marci is selfless, loving, and compassionate. Before the accident, she was an avid runner, baker, and active participant in the lives of her three kids. Marci worked in healthcare and had been a medical assistant for 15 years; always a favorite of patients. Since the accident, she has been reading more than she has in years, is learning to tie knots, and spent the summer wheeling herself out to the pool at her apartment complex to watch her kids enjoy the water even though she couldn’t.

Marci will return to work and walking someday, but the limitations and long-term effects of her injuries will be felt for years, if not the rest of her life. She has been weathering this with an optimistic outlook and an eye to the future. All the while Marci has no income, has many additional-out-of-pocket healthcare expenses, and has been supporting her family to the best of her ability.
