My father, Jose Alicio Gomes and step mother Claudia are a few of the many thousands of victims of the devastating floods that have recently struck their hometown of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. They have lost nearly 90% of their possessions, including their car, as over 5 feet of water flooded their home. They are fortunate to have survived the initial flooding, however some of their neighbors were not so lucky. They have spent the last few days saving fellow victims by boat, however many are left stranded in their homes and cannot currently be rescued. Most roads, grocery stores and other essential businesses are all closed. With more heavy rain in the forecast, this disaster may take many weeks if not months to fully recover from.
