father murdered by mentally ill son

I'll try to keep this short and to the point. My wife's father was killed by his son. This has been going on for about 15 to 20 years we have tried to get him help and Steve even tried to get guardianship of him but he is an adult. He has a past history of assault and violence he was on a court ordered medication and things seem to be going good, then covid happened and he was released a couple months later he killed his father. He is being evaluated right now to see if he is competent to be arraigned in September. We have hired a lawyer there was no will and probate was not able to do anything so the house and life insurance are in limbo right now. My wife and I are disabled veterans with two kids and a house of our own. I have a purple heart and a brown star if that means anything anymore. We are really struggling financially emotionally and still can't believe this happened. We could use any and all help. This just feels like a nightmare.
