Jack Merritt - Now and Forever

UPDATE (26/02/20)

Our initial goal of £30,000 raised in total had been smashed. As mentioned below, we are keeping this open and moving to our stretch target. Thanks so much everyone, keep sharing - this money will help so many people. L x

UPDATE (20/02/20):

For transparency - there is a touch over £4,000 currently in the account after celebration/funeral costs deducted.

Firstly, thank you from the bottom of our hearts to all those who have donated thus far. The reach has been phenomenal. The celebration of his life on Friday 20th December was a fitting tribute to such a wonderful human.

Now the work starts. Firstly, we are going to keep this fund open indefinitely. All donations are centrally managed by the Merritt family.

The money from this point, will contribute directly to the continuation and expansion of Learning Together. The pioneering prison education programme where Jack worked.

Learning Together seeks to harness the power of education as a tool for personal, institutional and social transformation. It is a Network of universities and prisons and probation teams who work together to offer contact higher education opportunities including people in prison and post-release from prison. As well as offering high quality contact higher education, Learning together challenges our criminal justice and higher education institutions to play more ambitious and effective roles in advancing social justice. Learning Together is passionate about broadening participation in our universities, passionate about the importance and power of education, and passionate about working collaboratively to improve our justice system.

Longer sentences don't work and never have. There is a chronic lack of funding undercutting our probation service. Helping people get employment, accommodation, build positive social networks and finding routes into meaningful activities including education when they are released is vital. These are the things that make the real, lasting difference.

'Rest in peace Jack Merritt, you’re my brother in arms
There’s tears in our eyes and love in our hearts
We never had the same background, culture, colour or past
But you devoted your life to giving others a chance

And for that, I’m so taken aback
Because you gave us all a voice, I have to say it for Jack
As a young black man seeing paper and crack
Given tougher sentences, it’s just papering cracks'
