MUSSENDEN TO MALIN MEGATHON IN MAY

WHO?

We are Celia Kerr (left) and Amelie Holden (right) of 1st Castlerock Scout group. We’re both 13 and we go to Limavady Grammar and Dominican College.

WHAT?

We are taking on the challenge of swimming (Celia) and rowing (Amelie) the distance between our beloved Mussenden and beautiful Malin in neighbouring Donegal.

This equates to a whooping 50 kilometres each and we will do as much as possible of the challenge on open water - Celia will swim at Castlerock beach and Limavady Pool and Amelie will row on the River Bann and top up her distance on a rowing machine.

WHEN?

May (cause it starts with an M and the alliteration with Mussenden and Malin sounded good)

WHY?

We are raising funds for 2 causes close to our hearts.

1) UNICEF

Following the humanitarian emergency in Ukraine, we choose UNICEF to be our charity partner. As well as ensuring more of the world’s children are vaccinated, educated and protected than any other organisation, they have one of the largest supply networks in the world which means they can deliver essential supplies where most needed.

2) World Scout Jamboree

We are honoured to have been selected as 2 of only 4 scouts representing Co Londonderry at the 2023 World Scout Jamboree. A total of 36 scouts will travel from Northern Ireland to this once in a lifetime event and we have been tasked with raising the funds to get there ourselves.

What is the World Scout Jamboree?

Robert Baden Powell held the first WSJ in 1920 to promote peace, goodwill and understanding following the first World War.

In August 2023 South Korea host the 25th WSJ where 40,000 Scouts from 162 countries will gather for this event to not only promote those same goals but also emphasise the work our young people are doing to address the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal on Climate Action.

To ensure inclusivity worldwide, the World Scout Association has a system where Scouts in higher-income countries, such as the UK, aim to raise funds for themselves and supplement Scouts in lower-income countries so please help us on this exciting and worthwhile journey whilst also contributing to the vital work UNICEF are doing right now.
