Mud and Lotus Farms grows crops for food donation!

Just 27 miles south of San Diego located inside the historical Villa Borja just steps from one of the most coveted surf breaks in northern Mexico, rests a low-tech, high-amplitude wellness center named Mud and Lotus Baja.

For three years now we have provided donation-based yoga and self-defense classes to our local community as well as hosted countless visitors during our quarterly retreats. With the recent global pandemic limiting our ability to interact directly/in-person with our community, we’ve taken the opportunity to pivot into an additional channel of service: community farming.

What began as an exploratory venture has now grown to include an A-list of collaborators and consultants. Our team includes Darryl Wong, Ashley White, Rhamis Kent, Brenda Henry, Anas Canon and Lety Gilbert. This group has guided us through our first chemical- and pesticide-free harvest of corn, beans, squash, tomatoes and peppers. When the crops are ready, we will begin distributing them in boxes to needy families and orphanages (one of which houses the elderly) here in Mexico.

After spending thousands of our own dollars and a countless number of hours, we’ve decided to open this effort up to the larger community of compassionate contributors and provide an opportunity for y’all to help us. Recognizing that the travel restrictions brought about by COVID-19 limits in-person volunteering, we are currently running a GoFundMe campaign in hopes of financing a full year (October 2020 - October 2021) of food donations to hundreds of families who could use a little extra help right now. The total we hope to raise is $41,000 USD.

The funds recieved will be used towards the following... 2 full-time employees and a part-time   program manager. All locals. Basic farm supplies (tools, seeds, fertilizers, chicken feed, etc), expanded irrigation and water storage systems,  and raised beds(darn gophers!). When we reach our goal and it pushes beyond additional funds will go to build out wash/pack/store houses, a greenhouse, solar generator and a used delivery truck.

Below is an article that was recently published by UC San Diego about our efforts. If after reading the article you feel moved to give, please make a financial contribution and more importantly, send us some loving, positive energy so we can keep our hearts fully charged in the spirit of service.

Please share this appeal widely.

In Solidarity,

Coach Canon
