Mtag - Sunshine Coast Mass Transit Action Group Inc is a group of concerned residents who live on the Sunshine Coast.  We are committed to letting the community know what is really going on with the Mass Transit Project that the Sunshine Coast Regional Council (SCRC) is currently working on.   We need to raise funds so we can let the community know exactly what is being planned.  Thanks to Cr Joe Natoli's Notice of Motion on Aug 20th 2020 Council are now planning for Community Consultation in early 2021.  Yet the majority of people still do not know what is being planned.   We have to ensure the Community Consultation is representative of all the facts and is open and transparent.  To do this we need to produce flyers and other materials that will enable everyone to have an informed  say on this plan.  We cannot just rely on the Council spin and rhectoric.  The current plan will put high rise development all the way from Maroochydore to Kawana and then down to Caloundra.  It threatens to make the Sunshine Coast another Gold Coast!

Mass Transit=Mass High Rise!

This is what is happening on the Gold Coast where they have done the same thing and built a Light Rail corridor.
This is what it looks like.  Fixed overhead wires and fixed steel tracks!  The same is being proposed for the Sunshine Coast.

Many people think the Mass Transit Project is about finding the public transport solution that is right for residents.  It is not.  It is about finding the form of Public Transport that will deliver the greatest Urban Transformation ie high rise infill.  Only one option is currently being considered and recommended for further detailed investigation - A 13km Light Rail Corridor from Maroochydore to Kawana.

Key elements of the stage 1 plan are:
Rezoning from 11,000 dwellings to 50,000 dwellings
Population to go from 23,000 to 103,000
More cars not less
800m corridor of high rise from Maroochydore to Kawana
16 stops in 13km with increased densification around the stops

The shaded area below is where they are proposing to put the infill.  Infill means densifying the current area to take more houses/units.  Under this plan it will be 5 times the number of houses that there now!

This is not only about implementing a light rail, public transport system but also massively increasing the housing density in this 13km stretch.

We need a transport solution for the future but this is not it!

The SCRC  has already spent $8.5million and has committed a further $7.5 million to this project.  The State Government, another $7.5 million, toward preparing a detailed business case for this proposal.  That is $15 million of our money!  Our transport levy in 2017 was increased by 56% to pay for this, so everyone on the Sunshine Coast is already paying for this yet the majority of people know nothing about it.

Even if you do not live in the immediate area, it will still affect you.  The Gold Coast City Council have funded over $250million for their light rail and are subsidizing operating losses annually of about $40million. Everyone on the Gold Coast is paying for this with a transport levy well over $100 per household.  The Sunshine Coast project is being modeled on what the Gold Coast have done so we can all expect to PAY MORE!  The total amenity of the Sunshine Coast is at risk.  And where does it stop?  Caloundra is next, then where?  Not only will there be more cars on the road with this plan,  the money has to come from somewhere.

Based on similar projects elsewhere, this project could cost between of  $1.5 billion to $3 billion.   In Sydney their Light Rail Project is already double the budgeted $1.5 billion.   On the Gold Coast all residents pay a transport Levy.  Who pays for the infrastructure to support this?  Everyone will!  This plan does not mean less congestion...it means more cost, more people, more cars and more highrise.  Is this what you want?
