Three Creeks Heron Hut Restoration

Our beloved Heron Hut is in need of a new skin!
In Spring of 2011, we began building this Earth-Bag Council Hut at Three Creeks, here in the Owens Valley…Payahuunadu, The Place of Flowing Water as the local Paiute call it. Due to extremes of freezing & thawing (Climate Change?), plus the biggest snow storm and flooding since stewardship began here 18 years ago…. the Hut needs to shed its old cracked plaster and crawl into a new tougher hide.
During these last years, there have been small bumps and scuffs. The outer south-facing wall has been most impacted by the especially big storms in 2017. Repairs are necessary now to preserve the building and restore its beautiful and welcoming presence. It did survive the rising waters pretty well, just as the council hut at the Ojai Foundation survived the fire… And still, both need work as well as some loving care, attention and beauty way.
We’re reaching out to you, our mud-slinging community of volunteers and funders. More than 75 volunteers—many from Europe— helped build the Hut, and more than 35 donated funds, to complete the project. Since it officially opened on the Spring Equinox 2012, the Heron Hut has welcomed hundreds of pilgrims, local, international and inter-generational. The SW gate is always open for the School of Lost Borders and other groups, when weather or ceremony calls us to go deep inside. Within these round hand-made walls, we have gathered for reunions, celebrations, ceremonies, countless Nature of Councils, Youth Rites of Passage. The space has offered a home for council, dreamstars, tears, laughter, song and dance…
Inspired by our collaboration at Three Creeks, the core Beyond Boundaries mud-slinging team spawned other council huts, including two ‘Peace Huts’ in Kenya and the one at the Ojai Foundation recently impacted by the Thomas Fire. There are more wanted and we trust this to continue be a seed for such.
Here’s what’s needed now and ‘the ask.’
Marlow Hotchkiss, project manager for the Hut, along with Siri Gunnarson, who learned and continued with the art of plaster, wish to return to Three Creeks in May (to get it ready for our next event in June). We’ve put together a small budget and are asking for your support to make this possible.
We’re seeking $3,350 for this two-week project:
• $500 for materials
• $250 for Marlow’s travel
• $100 for Siri’s travel
• $2,400 as a per diem ($100/day each, two people for 12 days work)
• $100 GoFundMe processing fee
