Owen’s Fund

Hi Everyone!

For those who are close with our family, and those who are just meeting us for the first time here, welcome! We’re the Hinbest’s – Rob, Kailynn, Owen (10), Abby (7) and our sweet puppy Violet (when does the chewing stage end?).

Owen was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) when he was 2 years old and has been battling this disease every day since. DMD is a rare genetic disease, primarily affecting males, that causes the muscles in the body to become weak and damaged over time. Muscle loss typically occurs first in the thighs and pelvis, followed by the arms. This can result in trouble standing and walking, and most are unable to walk by the age of 12. This is where we are in our journey today.

Some of you may know that we live in a beautiful family-built home that we love. It’s nestled in the woods, it’s cozy – but it’s far from wheelchair accessible. As Owen’s disease progresses and his abilities are challenged, we are faced with the overwhelming and financially-demanding task of retrofitting our home to accommodate his wheelchair, primarily an accessible washroom and a bedroom on the main floor. This project will require extensive renovations to our home, including accessibility ramps, relocation of walls and plumbing, accessible plumbing fixtures such as a toilet and a shower, and new flooring.

For us to ask for help is far beyond our comfort zone, but this project puts a strong financial strain on our family, on top of the challenges that we are already facing. A donation in any amount is so very much appreciated and special beyond measure.
