Supporting the Linguistic Development of Bilingual Children
About us
Mother Tongues is a non-profit organisation working to promote multilingualism in Ireland. We offer advice and support to families who are raising bilingual children and to schools and preschools that have high numbers of bilingual children.
For three years, we have worked with families from all over the world who have made Ireland their home. These families have asked us to provide a space to meet and discuss bilingualism and offer activities that would help their children foster the love of all of their languages.
Following a lot of research, we decided to create Mother Tongues Families!
With the perfect location and incredible team of experts, our aim is to grow and develop this project into 2020 and beyond!
Our New Initiative
Mother Tongues Families is an intercultural group of parents and young children (5 years and under). Through a range of interactive activities, our aim is to give these parents the tools they need to support their child’s linguistic development and empower them to support and promote language and communication both inside and outside of the home. The sessions are specifically aimed at supporting parents in fostering two languages or more from a young age.
Parents will take part in creative activities, storytelling and games that foster parent-child communication in a positive and non-judgemental atmosphere.
This group will provide an excellent opportunity for parents who are new to the country or parenting, to socialise with other parents while their child experiences play outside of the home.
How It Will Work
Mother Tongues Families will be a weekly gathering, held at the Robert Emmet Community Development Project in Dublin 8, starting in January 2020. This is an excellent, central location in an area of great cultural diversity and easy access to public transport.
In each session, the group will be led by a group of experts in the area of language and play.
Parents will be able to:
● Make new friends in a relaxed and friendly environment
● Play games that stimulate language and communication skills in their child
● Ask questions to experts on language development and bilingualism
● Explore age appropriate ideas for play that can be replicated at home
What Your Support Will Mean To Us
We know that this is a vital service that will benefit multilingual families and the wider community across Dublin.
Funding would allow us to successfully run Mother Tongues Families for one year. This in turn will help us to establish solid foundations for the continuation of the group into the future.
With the €3,000 raised through funding, we will be able to:
● Buy necessary equipment
● Buy appropriate books across a range of languages
● Buy games that can be used to stimulate language
● Buy materials for sensory play
● Pay for room rental
● Cover expenses for our volunteers
