Help Mitigate the Overdose Crisis in Alberta

In 2018 alone, over 4600 Canadians died from an opioid-related overdose. This amounts to nearly 13 lives a day; more than twice the number of fatalities resulting from traffic collisions.
Founded in 2018, The FentaNIL Project is a student-led initiative based out of the University of Alberta that aims to ameliorate the detrimental effects of the overdose crisis throughout Alberta, including rural communities, by facilitating free naloxone training, distributing take-home naloxone kits and fentanyl-test kits, and educating community members on overdose prevention strategies and synthetic opioids.
Primarily, we teach campus and community members how to identify and respond to an opioid overdose (including how to inject naloxone) using a naloxone kit. Naloxone (also known as Narcan) is a safe medication that can save the life of someone experiencing an opioid overdose. Our organization is a ‘community-based naloxone distribution site’ registered with Alberta Health Services, and in effect, we provide trainees with free naloxone kits following training. We have trained over 600 people since our inception.
In the summer of 2019, we expanded this project to underserved rural communities throughout Alberta, training rural community members in small towns like Claresholm, Nanton, Ponoka and Redwater. In 2019, our group received a University of Alberta Wellness Champion Award for these feats. Most recently, our group has been developing a user-friendly, pocket-sized ‘fentanyl test-kit’ innovation such that substance users can test their drugs for the presence of fentanyl (a lethal synthetic opioid 50-100x stronger than morphine that is responsible for the majority of accidental opioid-related overdose deaths in Canada).
We are currently raising funds to purchase supplies for:
- naloxone training (i.e., syringes/needles, injection pads, CPR dummies)
- fentanyl-test kits (i.e., fentanyl test strips, test tubes, card-stock, printing costs)
Overall, your donation will help blunt the effects of the overdose crisis in Alberta by:
- allowing us to continue to train Albertan community members how to identify and respond to an opioid overdose
- allowing us to construct and distribute fentanyl test-kits so that people can test drugs for the presence fentanyl
