Misty's College Fund

Greetings!  My name is Misty Harlow and I am a 37-year-old, single mom, junior in college.  Obviously, I am quite a bit older than the normal college student.   I will be honest with you, I spent a good portion of my youth partying and wasting away the time I SHOULD have been in college, completely lost as to who I was as a woman and human being.  Low and behold, life happens and the best gift I could ever ask for came into my life.  I had a baby boy in 2009.

My son, Oliver, has been a savior for me.  He has inspired me to live my life with purpose.  My life hasn't always been easy.  My childhood was ravaged with things little children shouldn't see or experience.  I grew up with the worst self-esteem possible, hence, I turned to partying to escape.  After a major heartbreak and Oliver's arrival, I decided that he deserved a loving mother that he can respect.  I became a student at Pierce College in 2012, a junior college.   I quit drinking and partying and am now 4 1/2 years sober.

Last May, I graduated from Pierce College with a 3.95 GPA and received my Associate's Degree, along with Dean's List Honors and Presidential Award Honors.   I transferred to California Lutheran University as an English major.  My goal is to become an English professor and teach on the college level.  I am two years away from my Bachelor's degree and then I will move on to my Master's.  Also, I received a couple of scholarships, which I plan to continue to apply for more as time keeps going.

Currently, I am waitressing and I have also been doing admin work for an enrichment company.  I tend to juggle two jobs, mommyhood, and school.  It is extremely hard at times.  Moving into a University is much more expensive than my former junior college and I am struggling a bit.  I am reaching out for help with my college fund, even though it's a bit embarrassing to ask for help.  However, I assure you that your donations will not go in vain.  It will be accepted with deep gratitude and I can guarantee you that I will pay-it-forward.

I dream of making a difference in other people's lives through education.  Education and knowledge are so important in our growth and economy. I want to be that teacher that helps students believe in themselves; I want to give to them something that I didn't have at a young age and that was the ability to dream big!

If you feel compelled to donate, I would be ever-so grateful and it will be an investment not only into my future and my child's future, but it will also serve a plethora of students who will be in my classroom.

Thank you,
Misty Harlow
