The Carver Countdown
We are counting down until the doors of Carver Community Center re-open in Schenectady! We have $110,000 left to go! We are slated to close on the Carver Community Center in the fall of 2019 as the historic home for Miracle on Craig Street in Schenectady NY. Re-opening Carver has been our passion project since we started our journey in 2015 and we are excited to finally be able to re-open its doors to the community again. We have raised $345,000 to date for the renovation of the center. With the help of the community we know that we can reach our goal of restoring this community asset back to use.
About Miracle on Craig Street
The mission of the Miracle on Craig Street is to root a culturally responsive network of resources and opportunities focused on wellness for children and families. We were founded in 2015 as a grassroots collective of neighborhood residents that wanted to create a positive change and impact in our hometown. We have since expanded to become a non profit organization 501 c(3) that is focused on health and wellness through physical activity, food and farming, and personal development and healing. We collaborate with several community non profits to provide programming for youth summer sports leagues, yoga in the park, self care workshops, a community gardening project, and a painting and poetry series. We are hopeful to expand our reach in our new home; The Carver Community Center.
About The Carver Community Center
The George Washington Carver Community Center is a significant landmark of the Civil Rights movement. The programs and services provided by this center supported the improvement of conditions for the African American and minority community in the Hamilton Hill area. The Carver Community Center at 700 Craig Street was built in 1969 to improve the quality of life for residents in the Hamilton Hill neighborhood in Schenectady. The building was designed by architects Werner Feibes and Jim Schmitt who designed many iconic buildings in the city of Schenectady. The Center was built to fill several needs of the Hamilton Hill Community in Schenectady focusing on health and wellness from its inception. Out of Carver came Hometown Health, New Choices Recovery, and Schenectady Community Action Program which all still stand today.
