Mikayla Martin Community Celebration of Life

Donation protected
Hi Everyone,

As you have no doubt heard, Squamish's own Mikayla Martin was killed in a tragic mountain biking accident on October 1st, on the trails behind the Stawamus Chief. For 22 years, Mikayla enriched the lives of all who knew her. Through her many connections to our community – her family, friends, school, skiing, biking and her love of the outdoors, Mikayla profoundly touched the lives of so many of us.

I have known her family for many years and was part of the SAR team who attended at Mikayla's accident. I am deeply affected by this tragedy and I know that I am not alone. James and Christine, Mikayla's parents, could have chosen to hold a small, private memorial for just the family. Instead, knowing how much Mikayla meant to the skiing and mountain biking communities, to her friends from school, and to Squamish and beyond, they will be holding a fully public Celebration of Life for anyone and everyone who wishes to attend.

This Celebration of Life will be a time to bring Mikayla’s entire community together to celebrate her life, to remember her passion, her joy, and her ability to live every moment to its fullest. At the darkest time of their lives, the Martins are opening up their hearts to us, their community, to share our own grief with them.

This fund was created so those who wish to help have a tangible way to contribute and to lessen the financial burden on Mikayla's family, who are doing their best to find some way to make sense of their immeasurable loss.  At times like this, so many of us want to help, but don't know how. Flowers and cards are kind and thoughtful, but for those who would like to help James, Christine & Shondra in a more practical way, I ask you to please donate a few dollars toward helping defray the costs of what is going to be a beautiful, fun, colourful and heartfelt tribute to an incredible young woman who meant so much to this  entire community, and is gone from our lives far too soon. The chosen amount should help to cover at least the cost of the location, the food, and rentals for the hundreds of people expected to attend.

On behalf of the Martins, thank you for all your support, and for being the amazing community of people that were part of Mikayla’s life.

The Mikayla Martin Celebration of Life will take place on Saturday October 26th at 2pm, at the West Coast Railway Heritage Park in Squamish, and all are welcome.

(This fund has been started with the permission of James & Christine Martin, and every dollar collected will go directly to them.)

There is also a legacy fund created in Mikayla's memory, to support young athletes in the pursuit of their athletic dreams.
