MIDWIFERY VOLUNTEER INTERNSHIP

KATHMANDU, NEPAL

Thank you so much for taking the time to visit my page!

In about 4 months I will be undertaking a volunteer internship in Kathmandu, Nepal. I will be in my final year of Midwifery and will be supporting and learning from Nepal’s largest Maternity hospital for four weeks.

The maternal and infant mortality rate in Nepal is one of the highest in Asia, with majority of these deaths caused by preventable causes such as haemorrhage, sepsis, prolonged or obstructed labour and hypertensive disorders. Woman in Nepal experience a shocking lack of health care resources during pregnancy and beyond. When women arrive to the hospital their families must provide payment for everything from surgical gloves, IV cannulas, needles and medications/anaesthetics. Due to financial disadvantage, most women will give birth without pain relief and any other medical resources required.

During my time in Nepal, I will be placed in Nepal’s largest maternity hospital. I will be doing a specialised placement in the neonatal intensive care unit for two weeks as well as one week in the general maternity ward which sees an average of 60 deliveries a day. I will then have the opportunity to travel to a remote village in the Himalayan foothills to volunteer at a health clinic that deals with a wide range of health issues ranging from emergencies to chronic issues and mother and baby care.

Before going to Nepal, I will be taking Nepalese language classes to become comfortable in conversational and clinical Nepali. I will be purchasing surgical gloves, alcohol gel, surgical masks, stethoscopes and more to leave with the teams I am working with at both the hospital and village clinic.

I am passionate about Midwifery and providing the absolute best care possible to mothers and babies. I am so grateful for the opportunity to support and learn from the women, midwives and hospital during this volunteer internship in Nepal.

As this is a fully self-funded volunteer internship any contribution big or small would be so greatly appreciated.

I will be organising many fundraising activities in the upcoming months:
