For those of you who know Michelle, you know that she is truly a special person. Kind, funny, and beautiful inside and out. She has hopes and dreams and is well on her way to achieving those. Michelle and her boyfriend, Chris, recently bought their first house and just brought a puppy, Gilly, into their lives. They planned on marriage in the near future and starting a family after that.
Unfortunately, she was just dealt a pretty significant road block. On April 28th, at the age of 29, Michelle was diagnosed with breast cancer. Her cancer is an invasive ductal carcinoma, grade III - meaning it is a quickly growing cancer.
To say these last few days have been a torturous whirlwind for her is an understatement. We learned yesterday that Michelle will begin chemo in the next two weeks. Chemo will be followed by surgery, and then likely radiation. She will also be put on hormone inhibitors. In addition, she is considering fertility preservation options such as egg retrieval in hopes that after she makes it through this hurdle she can start her family.
As you can imagine, a cancer diagnosis not only brings about stress and worry for the effectiveness of treatment, it also has a huge pricetag associated with it. Not only are the cancer treatments expensive, but so is fertility preservation. Egg retrieval and freezing alone cost between $12,000 and $15,000. The storage fees are around $1,000 per year. Then there are additional costs when she looks to attempt to concieve using those eggs.
Many people have FMLA and Short Term Disability in their jobs, but Michelle is a nanny and a doula. She only gets paid when she's on the job. Going through chemo means that any time the kids are sick, she can't work. She will also have days where she is not feeling well from the chemo and won't be able to work, so you can imagine the impact to her income.
I'm setting up this GoFundMe page in hopes of relieving some of her financial burden. Anything you can contribute will help. If you can't help financially, prayers and positive thoughts are always welcome.
