Meo goes to Cambodia to teach hair!

Dear Community,

As most of you may know, I’m a huge advocate for helping people and giving back to the community through my hairstyling has been a privilege. I was a volunteer hairstylist for the youth community at Covenant House for two years, raised monies for them and several different charities for United Way and was involved in all sorts of charitable campaigning for the past seven years. I believe we are all here with a purpose, and that purpose is to connect and help one another. To show compassion not only to our family and friends but to our fellow neighbours near and far. I have no reservations when raising monies for others, but I do struggle with asking for help myself and it’s a rare occasion since giving is my jam, not taking. I’m a terrible taker haha.

I have taken a year off from volunteering while I was honing in on my hairstyling but now that I have more tools under my belt, I’m ready to use my craft to help change some lives. I sourced out a volunteer gig in Cambodia with an organization called Justice and Soul. I heard about them through a hair podcast I listen to and the founder Matthew Fairfax was mentioned several times throughout the cast. He was referred to as being an amazing philanthropic salon owner. What did I do? I googled him obvs, found his Facebook page and messaged him to find out more. He re-directed me to his organization, Justice and Soul Foundation site and mentioned there’s a formal application process for volunteers. Once I fill out the application he said, “reach out to me again so I can let the head office know to keep an eye out for your application.” Ok then LOL, and did just that! The application took about two months to process and consisted of several Skype interviews with him and the head educator of the Kate Korpi Salon in Cambodia. I sent two videos, one of me cutting and one of me colouring hair which formed a part of my application. After submitting the requested information, it was a bit of a waiting game and then finally, everything checks out, and I’m approved, YAY!

To give you a little background info about The Kate Korpi Salon Matthew Fairfax founded, it is finally now a self-sustaining salon. Volunteers have donated their time and paid their own way to get to Cambodia which ultimately aided in the salon becoming fully self-sustainable.

The Kate Korpi salon aims to educate young citizens who were once smuggled into the sex trade and to provide them with new skills so they no longer have to return to the streets of Cambodia.  They have curriculums in place for the hair industry, the aesthetics industry, the nail tech industry, and several more. If you or anyone you know in the beauty industry would like to volunteer, please get in touch with them.

This will be one of my biggest volunteer endeavours to date, and I will be away for one month with no source of revenue. I am kindly asking for your donations to help me with this opportunity of a lifetime. Your donations will help cushion some of the costs that will be incurred during my stay in Cambodia and all residual funds will be directly donated to the organization.

As mentioned before, we are all connected and energy beings. By donating to me, you are essentially helping the students attending the Kate Korpi Salon’s education program. You’re helping them gain new skills to better their lives. No amount is too small. Again, ALL remaining funds from this fundraiser will be donated directly to the salon! I am excited for this opportunity and grateful for your donations. Help them by helping me. Thank you. #togetherwerise
