Mentionables

My sister and I had the opportunity to teach in Sanikiluaq, Nunavut the past year and fell in love with the North. The community members were nothing short of kind and accepting of myself and sister. There were many things we wanted to do to help but didn’t know where to start until one day after school. It is very common for elementary children to walk you home just for something to do. One of the students asked to use the bathroom after a long walk across town and when she took her running shoes off in the middle of February, we both noticed she didn’t have any socks on. After giving her some of our own socks, it was in that moment we knew we had to help. This is our way of giving back and raising the conversation around the issues happening in Nunavut.
GCVI high school students in Guelph, Ontario, in the native studies class want to bring awareness to an issue happening in our own backyard. We are looking to help raise money for the community of Sanikiluaq, Nunavut, to buy and send warm socks and underwear. Basic necessities that most of us don’t even think about are needed for those that live in isolation on the Belcher islands in Hudson Bay. The high cost of items and accessibility causes there to be concern to many community members. The money will go towards buying and shipping the items. We want to bring light to an issue that most don’t think of and create change through these items. We want to make the unmentionables, mentionable.
