Megan's Sri Lanka Placement

For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Megan Hennessey and I’m currently finishing up the fourth year of my undergrad at Laurentian University. For the Past 4 years, I have been fortunate enough to study Psychology, minoring in Health and Disabilities, topics that have always been a passion of mine.

Now, I have been given the incredible opportunity to practice what I have learned in Sri Lanka on a Mental Health placement through SLV Global. Over the course of twelve weeks I will receive training through various workshops while gaining experience in the mental health sector through meaningful work in the special needs community, aiding projects in psychiatric facilities, as well as a few days in which I will teach community members English.

 On top of these wonderful oppertunities I will be acting as a volunteer coordinator and peer mentor, supporting new volunteers and helping them settle into thier new position.

To participate in this volunteer placement, the costs of my travel, lodging in a Sri Lanka Family home, teaching and activity supplies, and other expenses will need to be covered prior to my departure. Volunteering has always been very important to me, and with this placement I will be able to give back to the global community while furthering my experience to bring home and apply in my own communities.

For those of you who choose to donate, or simply want to follow my journey, I will be posting a weekly blog detailing my preparations, experience, and reflections with pictures upon my return.
