Hi my name is Elizabeth I'm Alexa's Aunt who has been like a mother figure in Alexa's life since she was 5 months old. On May 6th 2022, I received a phone call no one ever wants to hear. Alexa was involved in a car accident. I got in my car and drove to Midland not knowing details yet. Arriving to Midland I had 15 minutes with her before she was life flighted to Beaumont in Royal Oak. I did learn in the 15 minutes at Midland about her injuries. Which were a grade 5 spleen bleed, brain bleed, 7-8-9 rib fractures on her left side, T-10 & T-11 fractured, left side lower Jaw fractured, separation of C1 & C2, multiple skull fractures. When Alexa left Midland so did I. Arriving to Beaumont Alexa had many teams Neuro, Trauma, Icu all waiting for her. When I got in the Doctor's came back said that she was going for surgery in the morning at 7am this was going to be the surgery to fuse C1 & C2 back together. I asked how long this would take? I was told 3 hours. All throughout the night she had hourly Neuro checks. And Alexa had movement her right leg, arm, hand, her left foot, leg. The next morning came and it was surgery time. That 3 hour surgery turned into 6 hours. The surgeon came out told me you have no clue how blessed you are. He said in 26 years of being a surgeon i have never got a patient like this. They never make it to me 95% die instantly the other 5% die in transport. Alexa was 100% internally decapitated and beat all odds. When we got back to her room lifted sedation she was not responding. Down to ct and mri we went. No real answer why. C1 & C2 are fixed with rods, jaw is now fixed with a plate. Alexa had a trach place and remains on a ventilator she cannot breath on her own. She has no cough, and cannot swallow, no movement to the limbs. Alexa has woke up and is responding to you by blinking her eyes. She has both lungs inflated again took 3 placements of chest tubes on the left side to get that lung inflated again. She has her good days and bad. When we are more stable we will be going to a rehab just for training so when we get home I will know how to care for her trach, tube feed, catheter, ventilator settings. And yes when Alexa is discharged she will be coming home with me. Currently the accident is under investigation. I will have to attend court over the kid that made poor choice and did what he did. Alexa will need many medical devices that insurance is going to make me jump through hoops for. So this page is to help for Alexa's needs. Ramp, better bed, room items, shower buddy chair, vehicle, lifts. And so on we appreciate everything. I want to thank my Husband, Mom, Grandma for holding down the house, getting our kids to and from school, games and practices. While I spend my days by Alexa's side. Leaving a couple times to come home to work then right back down to her. About a week ago Alexa was diagnosed with lis (locked in syndrome) they say she will only be able to blink but again they don't know because in this week Alexa has been opening her mouth on command. It's just a waiting game from here on out to see what her body will regain from healing.
