August 2017, rented this beautiful home in Lansing. Close to school, highway, and the main drag in Lansing it literally had "it all". Dutifully cleaning to make a way for my family, vacuumed, swept, mopped, cleaned the refrigerator and stove noticing a heavy build up of dust and animal fur.
The next day, I was in the ER with an obvious allergic reaction. At first, we thought it was shellfish but soon discovered it was mold. Four species of mold to be exact. For the next month, I was exposed to by ventilation and ingestion (it was in the water supply), aspergillius fumigatus and Chaetomium which settled in my lungs causing a half inch hole. Neurologically I was a wreck, unable to get to and from work without explosive diarrhea or vomiting. To make matters worse, after the initial exposure couldn't find the mold because the owner had taken precautions to conceal the mold and secure a quick rental.
Now, after seeing 6 clinicians at Ingalls/UoC Hospitals, Ingalls, UIC and 3 ER visits, being diagnosed with Incipient COPD, degenerative valve disease, mold induced diabetes and the hole in my right bronchus, the Cook County Sheriff knocked on my door telling me the owner hadn't paid the mortgage and the home was in foreclosure (this is at least a year long process where renters are afforded by the bank the opportunity to remain in the home until they find replacement dwelling). To date, the exposure resulted in $57,000 in medical expenses (Obamacare in IL is on 6 month delay, just beginning 'Open Enrollment' in November).
On top of all else, we were forced out in 3 days as the bank seized the home. Now, sequestered in a motel we are in the worst possible state and need help, immediately.
I believe that if you are reading this, you are doing so by divine appointment for nothing happens per chance or coincidence. I have a LONG road ahead, but my faith just won't allow me to give up. 12 medicines, 3 procedures completed with more to come and a host of legal challenges put us in immediate danger of homelessness. I never asked for this nor did anything to accomplish this.
I am imploring you, as a father, friend, renter and citizen of Illinois to open your heart and contribute if you can. This is an extraordinary request, but then my God specializes in things that seem 'impossible'.
I am never dependent upon others, but have no shame about covering my family. After our story of trial and overcoming, they deserve better. My 16 year old son, my 15 year old daughter deserve better. My earnest pleading prayer is that you will not forget us and stand with us, at this time of our most urgent need.
