Rutgers Law US-Mexico Border Trip

Donation protected
The Rutgers Immigrant Rights Clinic is partnering with Espacio Migrante to bring six law students to the Tijuana border. Espacio Migrante is a bi-national community organization based in Tijuana, which works with migrant communities to promote access to Human Rights, such as education and health; provide comprehensive care and at the same time raise awareness in the community about the realities of migrants.

The Rutgers Immigrant Rights Clinic organized this trip in partnership with Espacio Migrante for the first time in 2022 and hopes to continue the trip for years to come. The law students who attend the trip bring varying life perspectives and experiences. They are excited to apply their legal knowledge and skills to a new community of diverse individuals. The all-female group includes three Camden students and three Newark students, including 1Ls, 2Ls and a 3L, who hail from all parts of the world.

The trip is scheduled to take place at the end of May 2023.

Under Title 42, officials have expelled asylum-seekers inside the United States 2.5 million times and turned away most people who requested asylum at the border, on grounds of "preventing the spread of COVID-19". Title 42 is disproportionately affecting people from countries like Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Venezuela, and Mexico. Many of the individuals seeking asylum in the United States come in search of safety from persecution, torture, and sometimes death. Today there are more than 82 million refugees who are displaced. This trip aims to address this growing crisis by providing critical information to vulnerable populations and individuals on the border about their rights. This experience will also provide students with hands-on experience in their legal careers. They will be supporting migrants, refugees and asylum seekers from across the world, including Latin America, the Caribbean and Africa.

All donations will go towards funding this trip. With your support and generosity, we hope to raise enough funds to ensure that this service opportunity and experience is available every year to students.
