Matt Herzberg, Julie Stecker, Thomas & Harrison

On Christmas Day 2021, Matt and Julie welcomed their two twin boys (6 weeks early!) to the world with much joy and some trepidation. Both boys spend time in the NICU, and Thomas had to undergo heart surgery for a congenital heart defect as soon as he was strong enough, but handled everything like a champ.

While this was going on, Matt was having strange symptoms and was unable to eat. After months of telling doctors something was definitely wrong, they found an obstruction in Matt's bowel which led to emergency surgery and a diagnosis of colon cancer. The surgery was a success but the cancer had already progressed into his liver. His team of doctors immediately started him on a treatment plan which made him feel much better for many months; however, the cancer is very aggressive and that treatment stopped working.

Matt has now been enrolled in an experimental trial, but between the cancer, the treatment and his young family, he has decided to focus on his family and treatment. The Herzberg / Steckers are experiencing a very scary and uncertain time, anything you can donate to help with medical and family expenses during this time will be appreciated. They would also appreciate any good vibes, positive thoughts, and prayers with them and their sons in mind.

Matt has been a huge part of Urban Axes, first as a coach and thrower in our league (a VERY good axe thrower!), then as our League Master in Baltimore while working his full-time job at Habitat for Humanity, and then for the last 3 years as our League Community Manager and Social Media Coordinator. He's organized tournaments, fun events, and has been a leader and pillar in the crazy community of axe throwing. He will be greatly missed in his role at Urban.
