Help Mary in her recovery from FND

In October 2020 I developed verbal and physical tics overnight. Since then I have developed more symptoms including: leg paralysis, intermittent loss of speech, chronic fatigue, and muscle weakness. I have now been diagnosed with FND (Functional Neurological Disorder). This has not only been physically draining but also mentally challenging for myself and loved ones.

There is nothing physically wrong with my brain or body however, FND is when the neurological system misfires therefore the neurological messages get confused between my brain and body. For anyone who has spent anytime with me recently will have been subject to my expletives and accents. So far, no one knows or fully understands the causes of FND.

My treatment involves physiotherapy, which I have already started, and support from a neuropsychologist. It is very important with FND to start treatment as soon as possible in order to get the best chance of a full recovery. Prior to this I was an extremely active and independent person coaching for North Shields Juniors AFC and playing football for Hartlepool United Women's first team as well as having a physically demanding job and regular training sessions. In March, I had to buy a wheelchair, as I lost the ability to walk, and therefore needed it to spend time outside the house. I also became dependant on those around me to perform most day to day activities.

There is no NHS FND specialist treatment facility in the North East of England and there are extremely long waiting lists for other areas of the country. This has led me to the decision to get some private treatment in order to have the best chances possible of a full recovery and hopefully avoid future relapses.

I am likely to need months of treatment from both my physiotherapist and neuropsychologist. Every physio session costs approximately £55 and neuropsychology is excess of £100.

As I’m not long out of school and only managing to hold down a part time job I would appreciate any donation no matter how small as it will all make a massive difference to my life and help me get back on track.

Thank you in advance for anything you can contribute.
