Market Central is a new residential community in the heart of Central Square, Cambridge with a strong commitment to nearby businesses and The Port/Area 4 neighborhood.
As we deal with the COVID-19 pandemic, it is clear that being a good neighbor is more important than ever. We deeply care about our community and the first responders who are on the front lines, so we created the Market Central COVID-19 Food Fund to support those who feed vulnerable groups. To start, $2,500 have been donated to three nearby organizations: Food For Free, The Margaret Fuller Neighborhood House and Cafe Luna. If you want to join this critical effort, please donate to this GoFundMe campaign. We will match your donations up to $100 each.
The work that these organizations have done in our community and beyond is extremely important, and we are incredibly proud to be able to support them. Here is a short profile of each:
Food For Free
Food for Free is a Cambridge-based organization that recaptures fresh food from groceries stores and restaurants that might otherwise be discarded, reducing food waste while guaranteeing access to fresh produce and healthy meals for emergency food programs and individuals in need. They rescued and distributed more than 2 million pounds of food, which helped to feed 30,000+ people. During COVID-19, Food For Free has been distributing gift cards to Cambridge residents who are at high risk of food insecurity. Our donation will help feed 20 families for a month.
Margaret Fuller Neighborhood House
Located within blocks of Market Central, Margaret Fuller Neighborhood House is the largest food pantry in Cambridge serving over 16,000 individuals and families each year. They also provide a broad array of social services including adult enrichment, community advancement, and child and teen services in The Port/Area 4 neighborhood.
Cafe Luna
A casual restaurant serving breakfast, brunch and lunch in Central Square for 14 years, Cafe Luna was named Boston Magazine’s Best Daily Breakfast in 2019. Cafe Luna has been preparing and delivering 2,000 meals per week since April for healthcare workers and first responders who are fighting the pandemic. Our donation provides meals for healthcare workers at Mass General Hospital, Boston Children's Hospital and Mount Auburn Hospital in Cambridge.
