We are raising funds focused to evacuate, transport or sponsor on-site the elderly affected by Hurricane Maria who need 24-hr supervision. We will help fund repairs and replacement to their homes or shelters, or help with cost of airfare to evacuate to the mainland USA through cash gifts when hardship covering these costs can be documented.
Hurricane Maria struck 100% of the geography of Puerto Rico and left the island’s healthcare system, power grid infrastructure and local economy in shambles. Life in the island is not different from third-world conditions today and is expected to degrade further by the day as people run out of emergency supplies and gas to power generators.
It is predicted that weeks to months will go by before power is restored. Nursing facilities sustained significant wind and/or water damage, making it nearly impossible for them to offer adequate, safe, custodial care and prompt access to healthcare services to the most vulnerable population. Family and caregivers of the affected elderlies also sustained heavy damage to their own dwellings, making it very difficult, if not impossible, to assume role of custodians to their disabled elders on short notice and under the dire circumstances developing in the island.
Internal Medicine Consultants (IMC-LLC) is a medical group based in New Orleans, LA led by Ricado Febry, MD dedicated to providing medical home services to frail, elderly patients with limited access to healthcare services because of their frailty. It is currently responsible for the primary and acute care needs of over 300 residents of local nursing facilities, group homes, and assisted living facilities in the Greater New Orleans area. It enjoys collaborative partnerships with the private organizations operating many of these long-term care (LTC) facilities serviced. Many of these LTCs carry a number many staffed beds that are not being utilized due to an overstock of beds in the community.
