Dear Friends and family,
Please help me send supplies and resources to my family and their community. They need water, food, clothes, diapers, lanterns , batteries etc. Aguadilla is on the far northwest of the island. Very little or nothing at all has reached that side of the island. This is a community I love, know and trust.
Please, please help, me help them.
My family is safe and doing well compared to the people around them. As my great-niece (20 years old) said these are "life lessons" and we will learn and get through this.
But these are the challenges:
There is no running water, no electricity, little gas, little food and barely outside communications.
The homes are destroyed, vegetation is destroyed, people are homeless and possessions are lost.
The hospital closed on Monday because it couldn't continue running on generators.
There is one bank opened 2 hours a day, with hundreds of people waiting on line; rationing withdrawals, all this done manually. One supermarket and one gas station opened, with limited supplies, again long lines to get any supplies if you have the resources., cash in hand (no credit cards, no debit cards, all systems are down)
The community has cleared the roads, cleaned up debris, housed the homeless and cared for the elderly and children.
My family had the opportunity to leave, but refused to do so. They are committed to their community; they are deacons and lifelong members of their local church.
They are out there looking for homes, clothes, food, survival supplies for their neighbors who have lost everything.
I have already started sending packages with supplies and money, but we need a great deal more. The post office is up and running, no running water but the post office is up and running, go figure.
Puerto Ricans will survive this hurricane and rebuilt; we just need a little help right now.
Please, please help. Thank you
Sincerely
Margie Vasquez
