MAKERS TO THE RESCUE: A Crowdsourced PPE Documentary
As Covid-19 gained a foothold in the US, we found our healthcare systems, and society, woefully underprepared to prevent the spread using vital personal protective equipment.
An intrepid network of volunteers and small-business owners mobilized, almost overnight, to pivot their studios, shops, and community spaces into a crowd-sourced supply chain to rapidly-produce vital equipment for the Americans on the front lines of this epidemic.

When the organizations which should have prepared us failed us, despite the hardships the pandemic has placed upon their personal lives and livelihoods, it was the artists, the makers, and the misfits, who answered the call.
This is their story.

Using the practice of crowd-sourcing, ordinary civilians have raised funds, prototyped and perfected designs, cobbled together a working supply chain, and built a distributed production cooperative.

We will showcase these small businesses who have abandoned their lucrative primary-business models, and joined forces with their competitors, to ramp up PPE production. We will highlight the non-profit makerspaces that have developed hygienic volunteer-powered assembly lines. And we will meet the regular people who have volunteered their own homes, vehicles, and hands, to manufacture face shields, masks, head coverings, and other PPE.

And, just as the production of the PPE is being crowdsourced, this documentary will also be crowdsourced. Using a variety of self-shot and remotely shot footage, we will follow this motley crew’s journey to deliver life-saving supplies to healthcare workers around the country.
Help us share the stories of these Makers to the Rescue and the medical professionals they support.

Donations will be used to fund production and editing costs, camera equipment for remote filming, and legal costs associated with production including licenses and permits.
