Mission Lazarus Honduran Internship
PLEASE HELP ME GET TO HONDURAS!!!
I have been offered an 8-week internship with Mission Lazarus in San Marcos de Colon, Choluteca, Honduras where I will be involved in both medical and educational outreach. It was a tremendous honor to be selected for this position. Now, my biggest hurdle is raising the money to make the experience a reality.
WHY I APPLIED FOR THE INTERSHIP: In the summer of 2009 I made my first journey to Honduras. Since then, I have returned 2 other times. Each trip I served as an assistant and translator in the eye clinic of a medical brigade being sponsored by my church and coordinated through Mission Lazarus. While I went to Honduras with the desire to serve others, the trajectory of my life was completely changed and I will be forever in debt to the Honduran people I encountered on my first trip.
In my previous trips, most of my time was spent working specifically with Dr
Faulks (See
video above) in his eye clinic. While
we worked hard to improve the vision of our patients, God was improving my "vision".
Before my first trip I would tell anyone that I was an introvert and not a people person. My educational aspirations were motivated by the need to be successful in order to survive in the ways I thought necessary for the American life.
After my trip, things were different. My eyes had been opened in ways I could not imagine: I experienced a sense of humbleness that has since led to an active life of servant-hood and giving rather than a life of an entitlement mindset focused on getting. I guess you could even say my life is "richer" and my heart is lighter as a result.
Not only do I want to return to Honduras to continue to show the love of Christ to the beautiful people there, I also want to shower them with my own love and appreciation.
WHAT I WILL BE DOING THIS SUMMER: As part of the medical team I will be assisting the Honduran doctors and nurses 3-4 days each week in the remote clinics of Southern Honduras. As you might expect, most of the good people of Honduras have little to no access to health care.
Believing that education is a fundamental key in raising an individual's quality of life, the primary goal of the educational team will be to equip teachers with the resources they need to be more effective educators. As a part of the education team, I will be observing and evaluating the students and teachers at a local school in San Marcos developing curriculum and teaching strategies for the teachers as we build relationships.
When not specifically working with the medical or educational teams, I will be
assisting with the implementation of much needed clean water systems.
