My name is Benjamin Joung and I am a student from Zeeland, Michigan studying Advertisement and Philosophy at Michigan State University.
When people hear the words "Ad Man" or "Advertisement," often corruption and manipulation is the topic which follows. We all know how billboards, TV ads, and magazines perpetuate many of the worst parts of our culture. Racial, economic, and gender degredation have become everyday practice in a field where fear, power and sex seem to be the main drives or our society.
I am a musician, a photographer, and a Christian who wants nothing more than to serve my Creator with the talents He has given me in addressing the needs He has made so blatant.
My personal mission are the fields of classical music, art, and ballet. Today I see more and more inspiring artists around me go unnoticed. To see talent unrecognized is not only an injustice to the artist-- it slights every person today who doesn't know Mozart except by his name, or Leonardo da Vinci by his code.
Of course, if I wish to be an impactful voice in popularising the fine arts, I have to grow both personally and professionally first.
The money raised from this campaign will be used to participate in a study abroad with MSU's departments of Journalism and Advertising. The program (Photo Communication) is a four week course which stresses the importance of the visual image when effecting people's perceptions of an experience or product. I will be taking classes is Advertisement, Photography, and Communication. My personal development in these areas seem paramount.
I have observed that most classical music adertisements simply show a stage with musicians on it. Ballet ads show dancers and art shows show paintings. Conversely, in popular culture today, almost every form of entertainment stresses the audiences experience. I believe that to keep the fine arts alive, we must stress the experience of it all. Any person can Spotify everything from du Pre to Lang Lang. They can crank it up in their car or listen to it in their homes, but that's not the whole picture. Anyone who has spent time at a concert hall knows that the experience is unique and inspiring. The difference is as stark as the difference between looking at pictures of sculptures and seeing the physical originals. I wish to develop my skills in promoting these special and precious experiences to share them with an audience who doesn't know what it is missing.
