Structural Engineering Students for Haiti (SESH) is a student-initiated and student-managed group at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, devoted to the rebuilding efforts in Haiti following the January 2010 earthquake.

Mission:
Structural Engineering Students for Haiti's mission is to help in Haiti's rebuilding process through a holistic and adaptive application of structural engineering practice.

Vision:

Structural Engineering Students for Haiti strives to improve Haitian construction techniques and provide educational tools for Haitian construction workers by working collaboratively on seismic retrofit projects and demonstrating effective and important structural improvements.

Student Goals:

  1. Social/ Service Goals
  • To develop a holistic viewpoint of engineering education that considers the humanitarian aspects of buildings.
  • To recognize the complexity of issues such as poverty and their effects on buildings.
  • To gain knowledge on culture, geography, economy, history, and peoples of a new region of the world.

2.  Engineering Goals

  • To experience first-hand the effects of poorly designed buildings in seismically active areas.
  • To gain knowledge on building methods and building materials of a new region of the world.
  • To encourage ethical choices when engineering future structures.

3.  Leadership Goals

  • To develop interactive teaching skills by presenting information in a clear, instructive, and understandable manner.
  • To expand teamwork abilities.
  • To encourage students to take initiative.
  • To plan and execute numerous trips by communicating with non-governmental organizations, stakeholders, and peers.

Haitian Community Goals:

  • To positively affect a community for an extended period of time that outlasts the time spent on the ground.
  • To use native materials in more effective ways.
  • To assist an established, native non-governmental organization.

Our current project:

We plan to build a temporary bell structure to raise the bells at Saint Rose de Lima Church in Leogane, Haiti. We will be partnering with Haiti Engineering (http://haitiengineering.org/) to spend a week in Leogane just before the holy celebrations at the end of August to get the bell at this church up off the ground. The father of this church, Father Marat, believes getting the bells back into service will give the local Haitians new hope as they rebuild.

If your concerned with getting a tax credit from this donation please visit Structural Engineering Students for Haiti 2012 that donates to a company called Haiti Engineering Inc. I made this donation site to make it easier to donate towards the amount I personally need to come up with to ensure my place on this trip. If you make a donation on the other site and still want it to go towards my personal goal, all I request is that you just email me a blank email with the subject stating "Made Donation on __/__/____ at __:__ pm/am" that way the President of our group can decipher what donation it is and apply it towards my donations. It's a bit of a pain, and i'm trying to make it easier, but i'm part of a group (SESH), which is part of a non-profit(Haiti Engineering Inc), so the other site allows you to donate to Haiti Engineering with SESH as the project of theirs you'd be donating to. So, long story short, they can't add every member as a project I guess. my email is [email redacted]. Thank you very much for any donation you are able to make. a small amount is very appreciated.
