Lucy's AgroEcology Masters in Norway

Beschermde donatie
Hello, dear friends and family!

I hope this message finds you well. Despite the ongoing Covid-19 situation, I am gearing up to travel to Norway this fall to commence the Masters in Agroecology program that I have been accepted to at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences in Ås. I am thrilled to begin higher level studies in the field Agroecology, which encompasses the science, practice and social movement crucial for the harmonious existence and peaceful survival of humans on planet earth. And, importantly, crucial to growing healthy and delicious food that nourishes our bodies and communities.

I am drawn to this field for many reasons and experiences across my whole life. Recently, my work and research founding the Tufts Food Rescue Collaborative (which continues to thrive to this day, redistributing food and crafting meals for vulnerable communities in the greater-Boston area) combined with farming jobs in France, Northern California, and Maine  have shown me the incredible power of bringing access to healthy food and responsible land-care practices to the forefront of social, economic and political agendas.

As the NYT article Bringing Farming Back to Nature describes, "Farming the land as if nature doesn’t matter has been the model for much of the Western world’s food production system for at least the past 75 years. The results haven’t been pretty: depleted soil, chemically fouled waters, true family farms all but eliminated, a worsening of public health and more. But an approach that combines innovation and tradition has emerged, one that could transform the way we grow food. It’s called agroecology, and it places ecological science at the center of agriculture. It’s a scrappy movement that’s taking off globally. Representatives of more than 70 countries gathered in Rome recently to discuss this approach to creating a healthier and more sustainable food system. It was an invigorating and encouraging gathering, made more so when José Graziano da Silva, the director general of the United Nation’s Food and Agriculture Organization, called for “transformative change toward sustainable agriculture and food systems based on agroecology.”"

In order to pursue these goals, I am gathering funds to support my travel and studies abroad over the next two years. The cost of living in Norway is quite high, and as such, the educational institutions require a transfer of funds into a Norwegian bank account. Turning to my family and friends to support this process feels like a positive way to bring you in to my passion for regenerative systems building, redistributing resources, and healing our relationship with the earth.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for any support that you can offer at this time.

In deep gratitude and love,

Lucy Zwigard
