Lovely Luna Needs Surgery

Spende geschützt
UPDATE 25/9/20: luna went for surgery on 23/9/20 and on x-rays there was a suspicious mass on her right femur. This is a prime spot for a bone tumour and our vet was concerned. We halted surgery and had CT scans yesterday to confirm or deny the tumour. Osteosarcoma in dogs is incredibly aggressive and would have been a terminal diagnosis for Luna. It is 9:15am and 30 minutes ago we received a call from our vet to say the results were back and the mass is NOT I repeat is NOT cancer!! Our baby does not have cancer! It is a cyst that is causing pain by applying additional pressure to the partially ruptured cruciate and is why the TPLO is more urgent than ever to get done. So week commencing the 5th October she will have surgery! They will fully remove the cruciate instead of just cutting in half to ensure no pain in the future. With that in mind the bill will then be £4350-4500 which is more then we initially bargained for. Please, if you can help our Looney Lunes by donating we would be so grateful. Hi Everyone,

I didn’t ever want to have to do this but we are so limited in our options and are desperate to do what we can for Luna…I pray that some kind folk out there that know us and know Luna will help.

A little background:

We adopted Luna from Lucky’s Legacy Rescue in April 2019 having adopted her brother Victor in 2018. It became clear to us and our amazing vet, that their physical health had been greatly affected by their lives on the streets of Romania. They were found on the side of a busy road, at 4 months old, with no mum. Malnourished, covered in ticks, lice and fleas and Victor even had a burn under his eye (very common in Romania for dogs to be burned to instil terror into them, hoping to bring out aggressive tendencies).

Victor has his own orthopaedic issues but Luna in the beginning was fine. We called her our Teflon girl. The beginning of this year though, things started to change. She would go off lead on her walks and come back lame, unable to stand up. She would hobble everywhere and so the investigations began.

The CT scan showed herniated disks and mild hip dysplasia and plans were made for spinal surgery. We dropped Luna at the vets and expected a call in the afternoon post-surgery. 2 hours later my phone rang. In addition to the above ailments, Luna also had cruciate disease and one of her cruciate had already ruptured. This took priority and she had surgery (TPLO).

We were under the impression from our vets that our policy covered us for £6000 per condition and so with the CT scan, medication and X-rays for her spine, we were delighted the cruciate surgery came under another pot…or so we thought. This sadly was not the case.

Luna recovered slowly from surgery and just as we started to consider next stages of rehab (with massage and hydro) her other cruciate ruptured (around 2 weeks ago). We were devastated as it meant further major surgery for our girl who just wants to run around and play.

We called our vets to discuss options and had set ourselves up for facing a small bill due to the limits of our insurance but we were told that in fact the £6000 pot was for all conditions and had already been exceeded and that we owed money! As I lost my job in February, I have used all my savings to keep afloat until Lucky’s Paws was up to speed.

To say we are devastated is an understatement and to think we are having to ask for help feels embarrassing and wrong. But it is all I can think to do. She will have the surgery regardless, we will find a way of course. She is our baby, our whole world in the form of a gorgeous, ginger, wonky eared and wiggly bottomed fox dog. If you can help us in anyway, big or small, please please do. We will be thinking of COVID safe fundraising events to do as well.

The surgery is £2700. The Xray’s are going to be £500 on top of this. Her insurance doesn’t renew until April and she 100% cannot wait until then for the surgery. Her medication and rehab will be on top of this.

Her medication (tramadol, gabapentin, onsior) we are looking to get via repeat prescription online to make it cheaper in the long term.

Her surgery is scheduled for Wednesday 23rd September so anything we can raise through this page will help. Thank you so so much in advance
