Below is the story told in Erin's own words. How their lives are now changed with a diagnosis of type 1 diabetes for their beautiful 8 year old girl. What I'm asking, and hoping for is to help give Erin some time off of work, some time without the added stress of bills. Erin needs to be able to be home with Bekah to monitor her bloodsurgars as they learn as a family how to keep Bekah healthy. This will be a process, but over time they will be successful.
Long Post Alert.....
So our little world has been flip turned upside down over the weekend. On Friday night Bekah started acting like she had the flu, so all night Friday and all day Saturday, I treated her as if she had the flu, push fluids, rest, eat popsicles if you can hold it down. Saturday night into Sunday morning I couldn’t keep anything in her. She didn’t look or act like herself, she was pale rapid breathing, sunken eyes prominent cheek bones- my amazing normally healthy 8yr old looked almost dead.
Rob and I took her to Toledo ED Sunday morning where we got straight back to a room and almost immediately surrounded by nurses and a doctor. It was then that we realized just how sick she was, she was in DKA (diabetic keto acidosis), her iSTAT showed her ph was HORRIBLE!- and everything that an iSTAT shows was horrible and just plain off. They got us up to the PICU where we spent the rest of Sunday and Monday morning with hourly blood draws, and glucose checks.
I am so very happy to report that we are now in a normal pediatric room at Toledo Hospital, being monitored, while we receive the education we need to ensure she has a normal and amazing life.
Here’s what you need to know about type 1 diabetes. 1.25 million Americans have it and 40,000 people will be diagnosed with it this year. Type 1 diabetes occurs at every age, in people of every race, and of every shape and size. This is a condition that can be managed. By living a healthy lifestyle filled with exercise and proper diet, you can live a normal life and do everything you set out to do.
This is not a death sentence, and this will not hold her back in her life. She will continue to move mountains and achieve so much more than I could have ever dreamed. She is my hero, my inspiration and everything I hope and dream that I can be when I grow up.
Thank you, for your prayers and well wishes for my best friends family.
