My co-worker and dear friend Renee has lost her soldier and the love of her life. Matt was killed while serving the country he loved.
Matt and Renee met in Nashville, TN, a city that had become a beloved home for each of them. Renee, a Boston native, completed her physical therapy clinicals at Vanderbilt and Matt, a Green Beret, from Kirksville, MO was stationed at Fort Campbell. Matt looked at Renee the way every girl craves being looked at. He looked at her tenderly, proudly, enamored, never taking his eyes off her, even years after they had 1st met. They loved each other unconditionally and were full of each other's adoration and respect. They shared a beautiful home together in Nashville with their beloved German Shepard, Charlie.
Matt was the son of high school sweethearts, Chuck and Cindy Lewellen. He deeply loved his sister Danielle and his brother, Andrew. He enjoyed getting to go home and visit them anytime he could.
On November 4, 2016, Matt's best friend, Wes, a fellow Green Beret as well, knocked on the door of Renee and Matt's Nashville home in the middle of the night to complete the hardest endeavor he had yet to be tasked with. He placed his hands on her shoulders, and delivered the worst news one could receive.
Now we are left to ache each and every day and night. But through the fog of devastation, we have been led to family and freinds of the other fallen heroes. We honor every man and woman who puts their most precious gift on the line so that we may live safe from the atrocities they bear witness to. Our hearts break in pain, but soar with pride for our truly fearless American heros.
