Lights Back On in Cisco

Help Eileen get her ghost town operating for visitors year round!

The town of Cisco was born in the 1880s during the construction of the Rio Grande Western Railroad and became further populated in the 1920s when oil was discovered there. The structures that remain today are really cool and typical of the old West style. Johnny Cash wrote a song about it, and parts of Thelma and Louise were filmed there. There is so much to love about Cisco – seeing that gave Eileen the idea to make it a tourist destination where people can stay the night in a ghost town. She moved there 2 years ago and has been working hard to fix it up every day since. Our sister is one of the best artists we know, and has been using what she has to create liveable spaces out of what was left behind.

Currently Eileen lives in a 1950’s airstream, has nearly completed the small post office, and among other projects is restoring a log cabin built in 1932.  Located more than 30 minutes from the nearest town in a beautiful high desert landscape, her old properties have no running water and spotty electricity. She’s currently putting almost 100% of her income back into reconstruction, and her income from her Airbnb rental is at a standstill this winter. During winter months, Eileen isn’t comfortable renting her buildings out because she can’t guarantee that her guests will be warm enough at night. Temperatures get below zero when the sun goes down, and it’s costing her a lot to keep the space heaters running long enough to warm these structures, since they are not insulated.

Most of us have friends and family nearby who can help us if we need it.  It would mean so much to us if we could send her some help from afar. Eileen can make a little bit of money go a long way, so we are looking at a goal of raising $2,000 to include help with the following:

*Insulation for the buildings- Winters in Cisco are very cold and summers are very hot!
*Complete overhaul of the electrical work (estimated at least $1000)
*Windows and doors for the cabin
*Mortar for chinking the cabin
*Floor finish
*Roofing supplies
*Wood stove piping
*Basic supplies like lumber, plywood, screws, plexiglass

***She wouldn’t like us asking for funds on her behalf, so we are trying to keep this a secret from her as long as possible. Margaret is offering a free session for a 4x5 tintype ($90 value) for anyone in Milwaukee that donates $100 or more!
