Let's Make Face Masks for Everyone in Laguna Beach

Donation protected
Greetings fellow citizens of Laguna Beach California!! My name is Nicholas. I do not have a Facebook, but I live in Laguna Beach Ca, and I have a plan to manufacture 1 cloth face mask for every person living in Laguna Beach California — 24,000 cloth face masks in 30 days by employing at least 44 out-of-work Laguna Beach citizens to manufacture the face masks. Questions? Please continue reading my GoFundMe to find out how I am going to make this happen — your questions will be answered below!

This campaign ends on June 13th 2020 at 11:59pm PST!!!

The Center for Disease Control recommends that citizens wear cloth face coverings/masks to prevent the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19), as genuine n95 respirator face masks should be reserved for hospitals and other essential personnel such as police officers, paramedics, and fire fighters.

UPDATE (05/21/2020 7:20pm): We are working on updating our GoFundMe campaign shortly! Please visit our website for more information: https://lagunabeach.facemasks4all.org

The reason why the United States experienced such a great shortage of face masks is because demands are not being met on a local scale. The United States Government had a stockpile of face masks to cover their own demands, however none of the states had built any stockpiles for the citizens. Demands for face masks at a federal level were not as big of an issue as the demands at state or city level.

My intention is to build and maintain a stockpile of 24,000 locally made cotton face masks for the residents of Laguna Beach California. If Laguna Beach has a stockpile of face masks for the residents, then we will not need to worry about face mask shortages during 2nd waves of COVID-19, or any other future outbreaks where face masks are needed for that matter.

By raising $275,000, I will be able to employ a minimum of 44 out-of-work Laguna Beach residents, bring some manufacturing back to the United States, and locally manufacture 24,000 cotton face masks so that Laguna Beach residents will not encounter a shortage of face masks in the future (more details on my plan below).

The success of my fundraiser means that every resident of Laguna Beach California will be entitled to 1 cotton face mask. And, this includes homeless residents too. If Laguna Beach's local demand for cloth face masks is managed, we will be one less city that is contributing to an extreme face mask shortage in the United States.

With this plan, we may be the first city in the United States to take care of their own local demand for face masks!

It would be great if we could say... "we do not have to worry about future shortages of face masks."

I like the idea of donating any excess funds after manufacturing the initial run of 24,000 face masks, whether raised by this fundraiser or any net profits from future mask sales, to help support local businesses in Laguna Beach California during the COVID-19 pandemic. But, my primary focus here is building and maintaining a stockpile of face masks for Laguna Beach.

As of now, all I can say is that I will donate whatever I can to small businesses in Laguna Beach California, face masks come first.

Members of Mask Force One will get a Profile Page with links back to their online assets (blog site, business site, social media, etc). Take a look at Gonzo's Profile Page for example: gonzo.maskforce1.org

If you have any fabulous ideas on how to reward the donors of my fundraising campaign, I would love to hear them! Please email me your ideas, my email is listed below...

"Mask Force One" is the name that I came up with for my team of fundraisers on GoFundMe. They are local individuals, some are owners of local businesses. They are here to help me reach my goal of raising $275,000 so that I can manufacture face masks for the residents of Laguna Beach California. The members of "Mask Force One" may not necessarily be playing a role, or bearing any responsibility, in actually manufacturing the masks.

Why are we raising $275,000 to manufacture masks?

— The minimum amount needed to produce 24,000 cloth face masks by employing 44+ out-of-work residents is $200,000.

If this fundraiser hits $275,000, then we will be able to continue manufacturing after the initial production run of 24,000 face masks.

— $200,000 includes start-up capital, materials costs, labor expense, misc., and overhead.

— $275,000 includes everything above as well as working capital for the following months.

******************************************************

If we are not successful in raising at least $200,000, then 100% of donations will be returned and I will not be manufacturing face masks in Laguna Beach California.

What NEEDS to happen for us to hit our fundraising goal?

— Below is the break down of how many people we need to make a donation, how much of a donation is needed per donor on average, and what percentage of total Laguna Beach population needs to make a donation for us to raise at least $200,000 • one of these 10 forecasts NEEDS to happen for us to reach our fundraising goal (or some variation):

• 27,500 people to make a $10 donation
(approx. 117% of LB population)

• 11,000 people to make a $25 donation
(approx. 46.8% of LB population)

• 6,875 people to make a $40 donation
(approx. 29.3% of LB population)

• 5,000 people to make a $55 donation
(approx. 21.3% of LB population)

3,929 people to make a $70 donation
(approx. 16.7% of LB population)

• 3,235 people to make a $85 donation
(approx. 13.8% of LB population)

• 2,750 people to make a $100 donation
(approx. 11.7% of LB population)

• 2,391 people to make a $115 donation
(approx. 10.2% of LB population)

• 2,115 people to make a $130 donation
(approx. 9% of LB population)

• 1,897 people to make a $145 donation
(approx. 8.1% of LB population)

When will this fundraising campaign end?

— Our GoFundMe campaign will run for 2 weeks and will end on June 13th 2020 at 11:59PM PST!

*********Again, if we do not raise a minimum of $200,000, this is not going to work, and I will not be making face masks, or employing 44+ out-of-work Laguna Beach Locals!

I am leaving the success of our fundraising campaign in the hands of the people!

How are we going to reach our fundraising goal of $275,000 in just 2 weeks?

Every person who visits our GoFundMe page needs to share our fundraising campaign on social media whether they make a donation or not — That means you!

— We need YOU to make a donation of any amount!

— After making your donation, we need YOU to share our fundraising campaign on social media to tell all your friends that you provided your support by making a donation, and tell them that THEY need to make a donation too!

— If you do not have social media, we need YOU to email your friends and family the link to our fundraiser campaign to tell all your friends and family that you provided your support by making a donation, and tell them that THEY need to make a donation too! (or you could text them)

— We need YOU to personally invite at least 10 friends and/or family members to visit our GoFundMe campaign and make a donation.

To reach our goal...

• We need to raise an average of $13.65 every minute for 2 weeks.
(or about 3 donations every 15 minutes for 2 weeks)

• Or we need to raise an average of $818.45 every hour for 2 weeks.
(or about 12 donations per hour for 2 weeks)

• Or we need to raise an average of $19,642.86 every day for 2 weeks.
(or about 280 donations per day for 2 weeks)

• Or we need to raise $137,500 per week for 2 weeks.
(or about 1,965 donations per week for 2 weeks)

When will we be operational and manufacturing masks in Laguna?

— If we can hit our fundraising goal of $275,000 by May 30th 2020, we will be producing masks towards the end of June 2020.

When will we begin distributing masks?

— We will begin distributing face masks, to any Laguna Beach residents without a mask and without means to purchase a cloth face mask, as soon as the first production mask is finished (estimated mid July 2020)!

How do I plan on manufacturing 24,000 cloth face masks in 30 days?

— I will employ a minimum of 44 out-of-work Laguna Beach California citizens

— Each working a 6 hour work day

— 4 shifts a day

— 11 people per shift

— Manufacturing face masks 24/7

— 6 days on/1 day off per week for the 1st 30 days

How will the employees be paid?

— The Laguna Beach citizens we employ will not actually be employees. Our mask makers will be 1099 Independent Contractors and they will be paid a performance based pay. Each independent contractor will earn $4 per mask they produce — minimum.

— There will be a tiered performance based bonus plan for our mask makers.

— 1 independent contractor producing approximately 3 masks per hour equates to about 1 face mask produced every 18 minutes per mask maker.

— Producing 3 face masks per hour per employee equates to an hourly wage of $12 — the California MINIMUM Wage.

— If our independent contractors produce an average of 4 face masks per hour (instead of 3 per hour), they will be making $16 per hour (average) — approximately the Orange County California LIVING Wage.

— With our tiered performance based bonus plan, our mask makers can earn an income that is above the Orange County Living Wage!

What will the face masks be made out of?

— They will be made from 100% ethically and responsibly sourced cotton fabric.

— We will attempt to source 100% Organic Cotton Material, but are currently working with suppliers to source material that fits the budget.

— The straps will be made from highly durable and long lasting material (a secret for now).

How will the face masks fit?

— The face masks we produce will fit nicely and comfortably. They will be prototyped and test fitted prior to going into full production to ensure proper fitment.

— We are already performing Research & Development in order to identify key features of a comfortable and well fitting mask.

— Our masks will be adjustable.

— We will initially be making 2 sizes: Adult & Kids.

— And we will also be developing different sizes to be put into production after the initial 24,000 face masks have been produced: Kids, Small, Medium, & Large

Who is designing the face masks?

— I am working with a graphic designer, mechanical/structural engineer, apparel manufacturer, and a few individuals currently manufacturing masks.

— The fundraising team members on our GoFundMe campaign (Mask Force One) are local individuals in Laguna Beach who endorse my mission to manufacture 24,000 face masks in 30 days and these campaign team members may not necessarily be playing a role, or bearing any responsibility, in actually manufacturing the masks. They are here to support our mission and help us reach our fundraising goal.

— We are all Laguna Beach locals who are donating our time, resources, skill, and experience.

What about rad designs?

— The initial 24,000 face masks produced will not have any designs and only 1 color option will be available.

— During the 1st 30 days we will be developing and planning for multiple colors and different rad designs.

What will the masks be priced at after the 1st run of 24,000 masks?

— The "basic" face masks (solid color - no design) will retail for around $7 to $8 depending on the size.

— Retail pricing for face masks with rad designs are currently being factored.

— We will offer free masks for all homeless citizens of Laguna Beach California.

— We will offer free masks for citizens of Laguna Beach California who qualify for certain government programs, such as State/Federal Disability.

— All veterans who have served in the U.S. Military, retired 1st responders, and including retired Life Guards will receive discounted masks for themselves as well as immediate family, unless qualifying for a free mask.

How will the face masks be manufactured?

— The face masks will be sewed by hand on industrial sewing machines.

How will you be able to get a mask?

— We will be implementing a safe, efficient, and effective method to distribute masks. This is still being sorted out.

How will the masks be packaged?

— The face masks will be sealed in airtight packaging.

Where will the masks be made?

— Locally in Laguna Beach. Exact location TBD.
