Let's farm - four cows for Kalangala!

Donation protected
We have the land, we have the labour, we have the crops - but how do we make them thrive? Natural fertiliser aka cow manure!

Bbanga project's Community Farm is all about creating long-term and sustainable change. Buying fertiliser externally is therefore not a solution for the future. We want to avoid dependence on third parties, keep costs and transport routes as low as possible, but efficiency and sustainability as high as possible. The ideal solution would be to keep a small livestock - and thus a direct, natural source of fertiliser - on the farm grounds. This is where we ask for your support.

At a glance, we need:
  • UGX 16,000,000.00 (approx. EUR 4100) to buy four cows
  • UGX 5,804,000.00 (approx. EUR 1500) to construct a barn
  • UGX 5,400,00.00 (approx. EUR 1425) to secure feed and medicine for a year (assuming UGX 450,000.00 (approx. EUR 115) monthly)
  • ... a small buffer for donation fees

But let's start from the beginning:

Bbanga Project is a small Ugandan NGO based in Vienna and Kalangala with ongoing projects in the areas of education, social welfare, nutrition, health and climate. Together with our employees in Uganda, we are ultimately working towards making the external influence of Bbanga Project or other NGOs superfluous. Instead, Bbanga Project's stated vision is a world where (Kalangala's) children of today support (Kalangala's) children of tomorrow. We focus on sustainable development work aimed at education and self-determination. In our eyes, this goal can only be achieved through holistic strategies and long-term measures.

Thanks to the Austrian Federal Ministry for Climate Protection and the Environment's generous support, Bbanga Project purchased a piece of land in Kalangala in 2021 to establish an agroecological community garden - the BMK Farm. Its goal is to ensure nutritious self-sufficiency as well as create an additional source of income for the supported local community.

However, the island's soils require fertiliser at every step of the agricultural process to allow the crops to grow well. With environmental protection in mind, manure is the only viable and natural way to maintain the farm and achieve good yields and is therefore needed in large quantities.

As a solution, establishing livestock on the farm would allow:

(1) Regular and reliable access to manure as a natural fertiliser to improve soil fertility while protecting the environment from artificial fertilisation methods
(2) Regular and reliable source of income, e.g., by selling milk
(3) Valuable skills for youth, mothers and the whole community as they play a leading role in farm management and environmental sustainability

Long story short: Bbanga needs financial support to continue the Community Farm programme. With the solution found, it is now a matter of financing this project - here we count on you.

Help us become obsolete - every euro counts.
