Hi, my name is Tarik and I am currently living in Malawi for 6 months helping a local organisation called “King Fisher Sekanawo”. Malawi is a landlocked country in south-east Africa and is considered the warm heart of Africa. The culture and the resilience of the people throughout all of their despair and hardships is remarkable.
The village that I am staying in is Rumphi. It is situated in the northern part of Malawi about 45 minutes away from the nearest town. While here at King Fisher I volunteer at “Lumemo Primary School” and help out in the surrounding communities. It takes me roughly 45 minutes by bicycle to reach the school. Fortunately enough I have a bicycle but many of the people in the village and the community do not have this luxury. It will take them roughly 2 hours by foot to attend funerals, visit family members, access healthcare and schools. Some short term failed solutions include swimming through the river and small boats. These have failed due to deaths from the strong currents and hippos. For example, last week a young girl died from a hippo Attack while crossing the river.
Along term solution is to build a bridge, connecting the two communities. We met with several engineers, builders, landowners and head chiefs (officials). In order to make a safe and secure bridge, it will approximately cost 3000 Euros.
The funds will go to cement, steel, timber, transportation and a few skilled, local labours. The bridge in total will be 30 metres long and 1 meter wide, so people can walk, push bikes and carry harvested crops.
The smallest donations can truly make a difference. For example, one bag of cement costs 9 €, one wooden board costs 15 € and transportation would roughly cost 150€.
