Gurmilan Foundation Accessible Surf Camps

HELLO!

Thank you for visiting our Gurmilan Foundation's Adaptive Surf Camp Fundraising Campaign. We're excited to launch this initiative so that in 2020 we can host more surf camps for people with disabilities.

Last year we took our Adaptive Surf Program to Baja. With the help of Pure Stoke & Locales, we provided 12 individuals with disabilities the opportunity to experience surfing. In 2020, we're  hosting camps in San Diego and Baja, and we need your help!

We are fundraising for three units of BeachTrax  to help make the beach accessible for those that use a wheelchair and with mobility impairments. Also, we hope to purchase a new  Beach Wheelchair  to make water transfers a lot easier and safer for our athletes.

Fundraising Phase 1: 1 Units of BeachTrax $725 (We have updated the needs)

- 30 feet of Beach Trax = 10 panels.


Fundraising Phase 2 : WaterWheels $2150

- This chair has proven to be the best and most reliable for adaptive surfers and assistants.

- WaterWheels high flotation armrests and wheels allow persons with disabilities to enjoy the water with safety and comfort in ways that traditional beach wheelchairs do not.

- This is the ONLY floating wheelchair that has passed the strenuous RESNA tests (Rehabilitation, Engineering, and Assistive Technology Society of North America).



Why surfing?

Surf therapy/Adaptive Surfing involves guided or assisted surf instruction.  Our Adaptive Athletes gain confidence through the thrill of surfing and a sense of pride and accomplishment — while being cheered on by family and friends.

The Gurmilan Foundation Surf Therapy and Adaptive Surfing Program allows the entire family to have a well-deserved day of respite, complete with healthy food and drink.

About the Gurmilan Foundation 

The Gurmilan Foundation was started by adaptive surfer Humberto Gurmilan. Mr. Gurmilan suffered a Spinal Cord Injury at age 15 while practicing his favorite sport, surfing.

With the support of family and friends, he worked hard to overcome his challenges and accomplish his dreams. For 15 years, he was Sports Anchor for the leading Spanish Language TV station in San Diego. He is also an Emmy Award Winning Filmmaker and published Author.

Humberto Gurmilan is currently a College Professor, Governing Board Member for The San Ysidro School District, City of San Diego Mobility Board Member, and a motivational speaker.

The Gurmilan Foundation empowers individuals with disabilities to reach their full potential. The Gurmilan Foundation envisions a world where disability does not mean abandoning your dreams. For some, the support might come in the form of a scholarship, grant or training. For others, it might be an opportunity to experience inclusive activities, which increase quality of life.
