Let's Help Sylvia Beat the Heck Out of Cancer!

In January of 2019, Sylvia Cordova’s life changed . She had been noticing a mild pain in her stomach off and on throughout the day. She made an appointment with her physician. Like all of us, she was hoping and half expecting to hear it was no big deal. Instead, she got news from her doctors that would change her life forever. Sylvia Cordova was diagnosed with stage 3 ovarian cancer.
The physicians initially diagnosed Sylvia with an “abnormal ovary.” She scheduled a minor surgical procedure to remove it. Instead of finding just an abnormal ovary, the surgeon found a large tumor encompassing her ovaries, uterus, colon and part of her spleen. What was supposed to be a minor surgery became a major operation. The tumor was removed along with a total hysterectomy. A simple surgery has turned into a complex treatment plan involving chemotherapy.
Sylvia’s doctors initially expected her to miss 3-4 weeks of work after her simple surgery. With the new diagnosis, major surgery and chemotherapy, it is more likely that she will miss a year of work. Like many of us, Sylvia was not prepared for this. She is currently in the middle of 18 weeks of chemotherapy. Her immune system is in a weakened state. Until she completes treatment and receives a full bill of health, she will not be medically cleared to be in a dental office. This will obviously be a financial hardship for a family that has sacrificed their lives for our country.
Sylvia is the most selfless person I have ever met. For the last 6 years we have worked side by side in our dental practice in San Antonio, Texas. She is the first person to go above and beyond for any of our patients. She has participated in every community service project that we have had including building several playgrounds for underprivileged children, volunteering at the food bank, and serving on an international mission trip.
Sylvia has spent the last 20 years helping patients on a daily basis. She has supported her husband while he served our country in the Armed Forces. Now that she has Stage 3 Ovarian Cancer it is our turn to help her.
